Subject Combinations 3% exam weight

Topic 8

Part of the JUPEB (Nigeria) study roadmap. Subject Combinations topic subjec-008 of Subject Combinations.

Engineering Direct Entry subject requirements through JUPEB are specific and vary by institution and engineering discipline. A strategic subject combination is essential for gaining admission into competitive Engineering programmes at Nigerian universities.

Universal Engineering Requirements

All Engineering programmes require:

  • Physics (Non-negotiable — foundational to all engineering)
  • Mathematics (Non-negotiable — the analytical language of engineering)
  • Chemistry (Required for Chemical, Petroleum, and some Materials Engineering)

Discipline-Specific Requirements

Electrical and Electronic Engineering

  • Physics + Mathematics (Compulsory)
  • Chemistry OR Further Mathematics (Recommended)
  • For UNIBADAN, UI, UNILAG: Strong Physics and Mathematics grades essential

Mechanical Engineering

  • Physics + Mathematics (Compulsory)
  • Chemistry OR Technical Drawing
  • Most mechanical engineering schools accept Chemistry or Technical Drawing as third subject

Chemical and Petroleum Engineering

  • Physics + Chemistry + Mathematics (all three are compulsory)
  • These are among the most competitive engineering programmes

Civil Engineering

  • Physics + Mathematics (Compulsory)
  • Chemistry OR Further Mathematics OR Geography

Computer Engineering

  • Physics + Mathematics (Compulsory)
  • Chemistry OR any science/technology subject
  • Growing demand means competitive entry grades

Direct Entry Admission Strategy

  1. Aim for Distinction (A) or B grades: Especially in Physics and Mathematics
  2. Mathematics is your safety subject: Even if Physics is challenging, strong Mathematics grades improve your chances
  3. Further Mathematics: If available, adds significant advantage for Engineering admission
  4. Check FUTO requirements: FUTO uses a different grading system and may have specific JUPEB requirements

JUPEB Tip: Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) offers one of the most comprehensive Engineering programmes. Their JUPEB entry requires Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry with minimum Merit (C) grades. Some state universities like LAUTECH have more flexible requirements but still prioritize Physics and Mathematics.
