Nigeria · 1 subjects · 15 topics · Updated 2026-04-06

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a national direct entry programme accepted by all Nigerian universities. Candidates study 3-4 subjects for one academic year at accredited JUPEB centres and use the resulting certificate for 200-level (second year) admission. The programme serves as a bridge between SSCE/NECO and university education, compressing the A-Level equivalent curriculum into one year. JUPEB is managed by a consortium of Nigerian universities and the examinations are standardized across all accredited centres nationwide.

What is JUPEB and how does it work?
JUPEB (Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board) is a Nigerian examination body that conducts the JUPEB programme — a 1-year intensive pre-university programme that prepares students for university admission. JUPEB is accepted as an alternative to JAMB for direct entry admission into Nigerian universities (200+ universities accept JUPEB results). Students choose three subject combinations from Arts, Sciences, or Commercial subjects and study them at a JUPEB accredited centre for one academic year. After passing the JUPEB examinations, students gain direct entry (200 level) into Nigerian universities, skipping the first year.
What are the JUPEB subject combinations?
JUPEB candidates choose a three-subject combination relevant to their intended university programme. Popular combinations include: Sciences (Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics, Physics/Chemistry/Biology, Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics), Commercial (Economics/Government/Accounting, Economics/Government/Mathematics, Commerce/Accounting/Economics), and Arts (Government/History/Literature, Government/Economics/Literature). The choice of combination determines which university courses a student is eligible for. Students must verify their combination is accepted by their target university and intended course of study before enrolling in a JUPEB programme.
