A minimum of six credits including English Language and Mathematics is required for most Nigerian university admissions. The May/June diet is primarily for school candidates while the November/December diet is for private candidates.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates in their final year of secondary school (SS3) may register for the May/June diet through their schools. Private candidates may register for the November/December GCE examination. For university admission in Nigeria, candidates typically require a minimum of six credits including English Language and Mathematics in not more than two sittings across WASSCE sittings. Frequently Asked Questions — WAEC WASSCE

Everything you need to know about WAEC WASSCE. Scroll down for the complete study guide.

What is WAEC and why does it matter?
WAEC (West African Examinations Council) conducts the WASSCE (West African Senior School Certificate Examination) — the main secondary school leaving exam for students in Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and The Gambia. A minimum of five credit passes in WASSCE makes you eligible for university admission in Nigeria and other West African countries. WAEC results are also used by employers as proof of secondary school completion across the region.
What is the WAEC exam pattern?
WAEC WASSCE consists of both written and practical papers. For most academic subjects, there are three components: Paper 1 (Objective, multiple-choice, 50 questions), Paper 2 (Essays/Theory, structured questions), and Paper 3 (Practical for science subjects). Each paper is marked out of 100. Results are graded A1–F, with A1 (75–100%) being the highest and F (0–39%) being a fail. English Language and Mathematics are compulsory for most university admissions.
How are WAEC results used for university admission in Nigeria?
In Nigeria, JAMB uses WAEC (or NECO) results as part of the admission requirements — candidates must have at least five credit passes in relevant subjects, including English and Mathematics, in not more than two sittings. Some universities require all five credits in a single sitting. After meeting JAMB's UTME requirement, your WAEC results are used to calculate your aggregate score for admission. A strong WAEC result significantly improves your chances of gaining admission to competitive courses like Medicine, Engineering, or Law.
