Frequently Asked Questions — NECO SSCE

Everything you need to know about NECO SSCE. Scroll down for the complete study guide.

What is NECO and how does it compare to WAEC?
NECO (National Examinations Council) is a Nigerian secondary school examination body, similar to WAEC, conducting the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE). While WAEC is widely accepted across West Africa, NECO is primarily accepted within Nigeria for university admissions and by Nigerian employers. Like WAEC, NECO requires a minimum of five credit passes including English and Mathematics for most higher education pathways. Many students take both WAEC and NECO to maximise their exam sittings and improve admission chances.
What is the NECO exam pattern?
NECO SSCE consists of three papers per subject: Paper 1 (Objective, 50 multiple-choice questions), Paper 2 (Essay/Theory), and Paper 3 (Practical for science subjects and some creative subjects). Exams typically run over 3–4 weeks in June/July (first series) and November/December (second series). Results are graded A1–F6, with A1 (75–100%) being the highest. The November/December series is the more commonly taken NECO exam for students finishing secondary school.
How do NECO results work with JAMB admissions?
For JAMB admission, candidates must have at least five credit passes in NECO (or WAEC) — including English and Mathematics — in not more than two sittings. After passing JAMB's UTME, your NECO results are part of the calculation for your admission aggregate score. NECO results are typically released within 2–3 months of the exam. Students who did not meet university cutoffs can re-sit NECO while also improving their JAMB score.
