Subject Combinations 3% exam weight

Topic 1

Part of the JUPEB (Nigeria) study roadmap. Subject Combinations topic subjec-001 of Subject Combinations.

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a national examination body in Nigeria that runs a one-year programme leading to the award of the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board certificate. This certificate qualifies candidates for Direct Entry admission into Nigerian universities and some foreign institutions, bypassing the traditional UTME (JAMB) requirement for a four-year first degree programme.

Understanding JUPEB Structure

The JUPEB programme is typically taken after completing Secondary School (SSCE/WAEC/NECO) but before university. It serves as an alternative pathway for students who:

  • Did not meet the cut-off mark for their preferred university in UTME
  • Desire direct entry into professional programmes (Medicine, Law, Engineering)
  • Want to shorten their university duration (2 years after JUPEB instead of 4 years through UTME)
  • Are upgrading their O-Level results

The JUPEB examination covers three to four subjects (depending on the university and programme) plus a General Studies course. Students are examined in May/June and results are released in August. The grading system is: A (Distinction), B (Credit), C (Merit), D (Pass), E/F (Fail).

Why Subject Combinations Matter

Your JUPEB subject combination determines:

  1. The specific degree programmes you are eligible for at each university
  2. Whether you qualify for competitive courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering
  3. Your university admission timeline (some combinations are more competitive than others)

Important: Always verify subject requirements with your target university’s JAMB/DE office before choosing your combination. Requirements change yearly.

Available JUPEB Subject Groups

JUPEB typically offers the following subject groups:

  • Science: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, Further Mathematics
  • Commercial: Economics, Government, Commerce, Accounting, Geography, Literature
  • Arts: Literature, Government, History, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies, Yoruba, French
  • Technology: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Biology

JUPEB Grading and University Admission

Nigerian universities have varying pass requirements:

  • Medicine: Usually requires A in all three science subjects (A-B-C minimum)
  • Engineering: B-C-C or better in relevant subjects
  • Law: Usually B-C-C or better including Literature
  • Arts/Social Sciences: C-D-D or better

Exam Tip: Some universities give bonus points for JUPEB grades in their Post-UTME screening. A Distinction (A) in all three subjects gives the strongest profile for competitive courses.
