Subject Combinations 3% exam weight

Topic 2

Part of the JUPEB (Nigeria) study roadmap. Subject Combinations topic subjec-002 of Subject Combinations.

The Science Subject Combination (Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics) is the most sought-after pathway for students aspiring to enter medical, pharmaceutical, and biological sciences programmes in Nigerian universities.

Core Subjects and Their Importance

Physics (Compulsory for most Science combinations)

Physics provides the fundamental understanding of matter, energy, and their interactions. For medical and biological sciences:

  • Biomechanics: Forces, levers in the human body, joint mechanics
  • Optics: Vision, microscopes, endoscopy
  • Electricity and magnetism: Nerve conduction, ECG, MRI physics
  • Thermodynamics: Heat regulation, metabolic processes
  • Fluid dynamics: Blood flow, respiratory mechanics

Chemistry (Essential)

Chemistry underpins all biological processes:

  • Organic chemistry: Drug structure-activity relationships, metabolism
  • Biochemistry: Enzyme kinetics, protein structure, carbohydrate chemistry
  • Acid-base chemistry: Blood pH buffering, respiratory compensation
  • Electrochemistry: Nerve impulse transmission

Biology (For Medical and Life Sciences)

Biology is indispensable for:

  • Anatomy and physiology understanding
  • Genetics and inheritance patterns
  • Evolution and adaptation
  • Ecology and environmental health
  • Microbiology and infectious diseases

Mathematics (Alternative or Additional)

Mathematics provides quantitative reasoning:

  • Statistical analysis for research
  • Calculus for pharmacokinetics
  • Algebra for chemical equations
  • Trigonometry for waveforms

Strategic Considerations

Biology + Physics + Chemistry: Best for Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry, and all biological sciences. This is the most universally accepted combination.

Chemistry + Physics + Mathematics: Better suited for Engineering, Physics, and some technology courses. Also acceptable for Pharmacy but not preferred for Medicine.

JUPEB Tip: If Medicine is your goal, prioritize Biology, Physics, and Chemistry. Some universities require Mathematics as the fourth subject for Medicine, so always check specific requirements (e.g., UNIBADAN may require Maths alongside Physics, Chemistry, and Biology).
