Law Subject Requirements

Core Subjects for Law

Most Nigerian law schools and universities require:

  • Literature in English (Essential — builds analytical and language skills)
  • Government or History (Essential — understanding of governance and historical context)
  • Any Commercial or Arts subject (Economics, Christian Religious Studies, Islamic Studies)

Law School Admission After JUPEB

After completing JUPEB and gaining university admission:

  • Law programme is typically 4 years (for JUPEB candidates) or 5 years (UTME candidates)
  • Nigerian Law School admission requires LL.B. from an accredited university
  • BL (Barrister at Law) qualification after Law School
  • Call to Nigerian Bar after completion of Law School

Common combinations: Government + Economics + any Arts/Commercial subject

JUPEB Tip: For Law at Lagos State University (LASU), UNIBADAN, or BAYERO University Kano (BUK), aim for B grade or better in Literature and Government. Some schools accept CRS (Christian Religious Studies) instead of Literature. Always verify with your target law faculty before choosing your third subject.
