What is NAT-I and how does it work?

NAT-I (National Aptitude Test – I) is conducted by NTS (National Testing Service) Pakistan for admission to undergraduate programmes in Pakistani universities. It is a multiple-choice question (MCQ) test assessing Verbal Reasoning, Analytical Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and Subject Knowledge. Unlike ECAT which is university-specific, NAT-I is accepted by multiple universities across Pakistan as part of their admission criteria.

What is the NAT-I exam pattern?

NAT-I consists of approximately 90 MCQs to be answered in 2 hours (120 minutes). The test covers four areas: English (20 MCQs, vocabulary, grammar, reading comprehension), Analytical Reasoning (20 MCQs), Quantitative Reasoning (20 MCQs), and a Subject section (30 MCQs based on the candidate's F.Sc. or intermediate stream). There is no negative marking in NAT-I. The test is conducted paper-based at designated NTS test centres.

How is NAT-I used in university admissions?

NAT-I scores are submitted directly to universities during the application process. Each university sets its own minimum NAT-I score cutoff for different programmes. For competitive programmes like engineering or medicine, a NAT-I score above 70 out of 100 is typically expected. Some universities use NAT-I combined with F.Sc. marks to calculate a merit aggregate — a higher NAT-I score can significantly improve your admission chances, especially for scholarship quotas.
