Nigeria · 1 subjects · 15 topics · Updated 2026-04-06

The Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) is an alternative pathway to JAMB for admission into Nigerian universities. Managed and conducted by Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, IJMB is a two-year programme that results in an IJMB certificate accepted by all Nigerian universities for direct entry into 200 level (second year). It serves as a bridge between the O-Level/SSCE and university education, allowing candidates to bypass the 100 level and enter directly into their chosen degree programmes based on their IJMB results.

What is IJMB and how does it work?
IJMB (Interim Joint Matriculation Board) is a standardised examination body in Nigeria that offers an alternative pathway to university admission. IJMB allows students who did not score the required marks in JAMB to gain direct university admission through the IJMB route. IJMB students study 3 subjects relevant to their intended university course at an accredited IJMB centre for one academic year. After passing the IJMB examination (with the required grade), students can apply for direct entry (200-level) admission into Nigerian universities — bypassing the first year (100-level). IJMB is recognised by all Nigerian universities as an alternative to JAMB for degree programme entry.
What is the IJMB exam pattern?
IJMB examinations are conducted annually (typically in June–August) at accredited centres across Nigeria. Each student registers for 3 subjects relevant to their intended university programme — for example: Science students take Physics, Chemistry, Biology; Commercial students take Economics, Accounting, Commerce; Arts students take Literature, History, Government. Each subject has 2–3 papers (depending on the subject). Grading is A–F: Grade A (70–100%), Grade B (60–69%), Grade C (50–59%), Grade D (40–49%), Grade E (30–39%), Grade F (0–29%). To qualify for university admission, students typically need a minimum of Grade C (50%) in all 3 subjects.
How does IJMB compare to JAMB and which should I choose?
JAMB (UTME) is the primary and more common route to Nigerian universities — taken after Secondary School (WASSCE). IJMB is an alternative for candidates who did not score high enough in JAMB or want direct entry (200-level) admission. IJMB advantages: bypass 100-level, shorter degree duration (3 years instead of 4), focus on fewer subjects intensively. JAMB advantages: wider university acceptance, no centre-based study required, lower cost. If you score well in JAMB — take JAMB (100-level entry). If you did not score high enough in JAMB, IJMB is an excellent alternative to still gain university admission in the same year. Many university students who took IJMB report a smoother transition to university because they already studied 3 relevant subjects intensively.
