📋 Exam Pattern

GAT General consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 120 minutes (2 hours). The test is divided into three sections: Verbal Reasoning carries 20 questions, Quantitative Reasoning contains 30 questions, and Analytical Reasoning has 20 questions. Additionally, there is a Subject Knowledge section with 30 questions specific to the candidates academic background. GAT is conducted by NTS in paper-based pencil-and-paper format at designated centers across Pakistan. The score is valid for two years from the date of the test.

Candidates holding a Bachelors degree (16 years of education) or equivalent from an HEC-recognized university are eligible to appear for GAT. Students in their final year of bachelor's degree may also apply provisionally. GAT scores are used by universities for admission decisions as well as by various government departments and organizations for employment screening purposes.

What is GAT and who should take it?

GAT (Graduate Assessment Test) is a standardised aptitude test conducted in Pakistan for admission to postgraduate and professional degree programmes at universities and professional institutions. What is the GAT exam pattern?

GAT consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 2 hours (120 minutes). The three sections are: Verbal Reasoning (20 questions — analogies, antonyms, sentence completion, reading comprehension), Quantitative Reasoning (20 questions — arithmetic, algebra, geometry, data interpretation), and Analytical/Logical Reasoning (20 questions — logical deductions, critical reasoning, analytical reasoning). There is no negative marking in GAT. The total score is reported out of 100. GAT is conducted paper-based at NTS-designated test centres. The test is available in both English and Urdu medium.

What score do I need on GAT for university admission?

A GAT score of 60+ out of 100 is generally required for admission to MS/MPhil programmes at Pakistani universities. For highly competitive programmes (Engineering, Computer Science, Business), a score of 70–80 is preferred. For merit scholarships and fellowship positions, a score above 80 is typically needed. Some universities also calculate a combined admission score using GAT (50% weight) plus the undergraduate GPA (50% weight). GAT scores are valid for 2 years. If you plan to apply for multiple universities, take GAT early enough to submit your scores before admission deadlines.
