ECAT (Engineering) 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

ECAT-ENG (Engineering) is a variant of the Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Combined Test specifically for admission to engineering degree programmes in Pakistani universities. While ECAT covers all three streams (Engineering, Agriculture, Medical), ECAT-ENG focuses exclusively on engineering admissions and is accepted by universities that require an engineering-specific test score. In practice, many universities accept either ECAT or ECAT-ENG interchangeably — but ECAT-ENG is preferred by engineering-specific universities and as an additional test score for students targeting multiple engineering colleges.

ECAT-ENG consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 1 hour and 45 minutes. The distribution is: Mathematics (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), Physics (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), Chemistry (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), and English/General Knowledge (10 MCQs, worth 40 marks). Each correct answer carries 4 marks. There is no negative marking in ECAT-ENG. The test is conducted computer-based (CBT) at designated test centres across Pakistan. Questions are based on the F.Sc. (Part 1 and Part 2) syllabus for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

ECAT-ENG preparation requires strong conceptual understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and especially Mathematics at the F.Sc. level. Focus on NCERT/Textbook exercises for all three subjects — approximately 70% of the questions come directly from textbook concepts. Practice previous year ECAT/ECAT-ENG papers to familiarise yourself with the question pattern and difficulty level. Since there is no negative marking, attempt all questions — even uncertain ones carry a 25% chance of being correct. Join a test series in the last 2 months before the exam to build speed and accuracy. For Mathematics, focus on Calculus, Algebra, and Trigonometry — these carry the highest weight.
