Pakistan · 3 subjects · 45 topics · Updated 2026-04-06

The Engineering College Admission Test (ECAT) is a standardized entrance examination conducted by the University of Engineering and Technology (UET) Lahore on behalf of the Pakistan Engineering Council (PEC) for admission to undergraduate engineering programmes at public sector engineering universities across Pakistan. ECAT is a mandatory requirement for admission to most engineering universities in Punjab and is also accepted by several universities in other provinces. The test evaluates candidates knowledge and conceptual understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the intermediate (FSc) level, along with English proficiency.

📋 Exam Pattern

ECAT consists of approximately 100-110 multiple-choice questions divided into four sections: Mathematics (30 questions), Physics (30 questions), Chemistry (30 questions), and English (10-20 questions covering vocabulary, grammar, and comprehension). Each correct answer carries 4 marks, with no negative marking. The total marks are approximately 400. The duration is 100 minutes (1 hour 40 minutes). The examination is conducted in computer-based format at designated testing centres. The questions are drawn from the FSc/ICS (Part I and Part II) curriculum covering topics in calculus, algebra, mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetic theory, organic and inorganic chemistry.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have appeared in the FSc (Pre-Engineering) or equivalent examination with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects, scoring at least 60% marks in the annual examination. Alternatively, candidates with ICS (Intermediate in Computer Science) with Mathematics and Physics are also eligible for some engineering programmes. Candidates with a BSc (Double Mathematics and Physics) degree with at least 60% marks are also eligible. Candidates must be Pakistani nationals or hold valid Pakistani identity documents. Students appearing in their final FSc examination may apply provisionally.

Frequently Asked Questions — ECAT (Engineering)

Everything you need to know about ECAT (Engineering). Scroll down for the complete study guide.

What is ECAT-ENG and how does it differ from ECAT?
ECAT-ENG (Engineering) is a variant of the Engineering, Agriculture, and Medical Combined Test specifically for admission to engineering degree programmes in Pakistani universities. While ECAT covers all three streams (Engineering, Agriculture, Medical), ECAT-ENG focuses exclusively on engineering admissions and is accepted by universities that require an engineering-specific test score. In practice, many universities accept either ECAT or ECAT-ENG interchangeably — but ECAT-ENG is preferred by engineering-specific universities and as an additional test score for students targeting multiple engineering colleges.
What is the ECAT-ENG exam pattern?
ECAT-ENG consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 1 hour and 45 minutes. The distribution is: Mathematics (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), Physics (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), Chemistry (30 MCQs, worth 120 marks), and English/General Knowledge (10 MCQs, worth 40 marks). Each correct answer carries 4 marks. There is no negative marking in ECAT-ENG. The test is conducted computer-based (CBT) at designated test centres across Pakistan. Questions are based on the F.Sc. (Part 1 and Part 2) syllabus for Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.
How do I prepare for ECAT-ENG?
ECAT-ENG preparation requires strong conceptual understanding of Physics, Chemistry, and especially Mathematics at the F.Sc. level. Focus on NCERT/Textbook exercises for all three subjects — approximately 70% of the questions come directly from textbook concepts. Practice previous year ECAT/ECAT-ENG papers to familiarise yourself with the question pattern and difficulty level. Since there is no negative marking, attempt all questions — even uncertain ones carry a 25% chance of being correct. Join a test series in the last 2 months before the exam to build speed and accuracy. For Mathematics, focus on Calculus, Algebra, and Trigonometry — these carry the highest weight.
