Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Elements
🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)
Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your exam. Literasi Bahasa Indonesia in UTBK/SNPMTN tests your ability to read, interpret, and evaluate literary texts (poetry, fiction, drama) and literary-inflected non-fiction (essays, cultural articles, reviews). Master six intrinsic elements: tema (theme), amanat (moral/message), latar (setting — place, time, social), penokohan (characterization), alur (plot), and sudut pandang (point of view). Recognise core majas (metafora, personifikasi, hiperbola, simile, ironi) and five citraan (visual, auditif, taktil, gustatori, olfaktori). Always distinguish makna denotatif (literal) from makna konotatif (figurative), and anchor every inference in a textual quote. Watch command words: tentukan, bandingkan, analisis, simpulkan — each demands a different response shape.

Intrinsic vs. Extrinsic Elements
Unsur intrinsik lives inside the text itself: tema is the central idea, amanat is the authorial message the reader should carry away, latar anchors the story in place/time/social context, penokohan is built through tidak langsung (shown via actions/dialogue) and langsung (told by narrator), alur moves from pengenalan → rising action → klimaks → falling action → penyelesaian, and sudut pandang can be orang pertama (aku), orang ketiga terbatas, or orang ketiga mahatahu. Unsur ekstrinsik sits outside the text — author’s biography, historical period, ideology, and socio-cultural conditions that shape the work. A frequent trap is mixing these two layers in one answer.
Figurative Language and Imagery
Majas are deliberate deviations from literal meaning. Quick discriminator: simile uses a connector (“seperti”, “bagaikan”), metafora drops it, personifikasi gives human traits to non-humans, hiperbola exaggerates, ironi states the opposite of truth, sinekdoke swaps part-for-whole, metonimia substitutes a related concept. Citraan is sensory language — a line evoking a smell is olfaktori, a sound is auditif. Identifying the right type matters because the question often asks why the author chose it (e.g., “Majas personifikasi pada larik X menyiratkan…”).
Coherence Devices in Texts
Beyond literature, the subtest assesses kohesi through referensi (pronouns, demonstratives), substitusi, elipsis, and konjungsi* (temporal, causal, adversative). Koherensi is the logical flow of ideas. Reading strategies: skim for gist, scan for specific data, SQ3R (Survey-Question-Read-Recite-Review) for dense essays, and mind mapping to link characters to themes.
Typical Question Patterns
Expect: (1) identify theme from a poem stanza, (2) compare intrinsic elements across two short prose excerpts, (3) interpret a conotative phrase with textual evidence, (4) read a bar chart embedded in a cultural article and infer the author’s argument, (5) distinguish amanat from tema in a paragraph-length fiction.

Edge Cases in Interpretation
Amanat vs. tema: tema is the abstract topic (“ketidakadilan sosial”), amanat is the prescriptive lesson (“manusia harus berani melawan ketidakadilan”). Examiners exploit confusion between makna tersirat (inferred) and makna denotatif (literal) — a question like “Apa makna kata ‘ranting kering’ dalam konteks puisi?” requires the conotative reading (kekuatan yang tersisa), not the botanical one. For sudut pandang orang ketiga terbatas, information the focal character cannot witness becomes a hidden trap: if a scene describes another room, the narrator has shifted — note the break.
Worked Micro-Example
Read this line: “Awan menangis di atas kota yang membisu.” Majas present: personifikasi (awan menangis — human action) and possibly metafora (kota membisu as silence covering grief). Citraan: visual (awan, kota) and auditif (menangis implies sound of rain). Inferred meaning: collective sorrow over a tragedy. A correct UTBK answer cites the line, names personifikasi, and ties it to the atmosphere of loss — never just “it’s sad.”
Connections and Pitfalls
This topic intersects Topic 6 (inference and evidence), Topic 7 (non-fiction analysis), and writing sections (parafrase, sintesis). A common mistake is answering without a textual citation when the soal says “berdasarkan teks…” — full credit requires a quoted phrase or specific reference. Another: misreading command words. Tentukan asks for a single identification; bandingkan demands a parallel structure (“X memiliki … sedangkan Y memiliki …”); analisis requires breaking the element into parts; simpulkan needs a synthesised sentence. Finally, when a grafik/tabel/diagram accompanies the passage, integrate its data into your interpretation — ignoring it costs marks on hybrid questions.
Practice Prompts
- Given a four-stanza poem, identify tema, amanat, and one citraan with the exact larik as evidence.
- Compare two short fictions on penokohan of the female protagonist — use at least one direct quote from each.
