Reading Comprehension

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Quick strategies for answering reading comprehension questions on UTBK.

What is Reading Comprehension?

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, interpret, and extract meaning from written texts. In UTBK Bahasa Indonesia, you will encounter passages of 250–400 words followed by 3–5 questions testing your comprehension skills.

Key Passage Types:

  1. Exposisi (Expository): Presents facts and arguments to persuade or inform. Structure: thesis → arguments → conclusion.
  2. Narasi (Narrative): Tells a story or sequence of events. Focus on plot, characters, setting, theme.
  3. Deskripsi (Descriptive): Describes a person, place, or object in detail. Watch for sensory details.
  4. Argumentasi (Argumentative): Presents a opinion backed by evidence and reasoning.

Main Idea (Gagasan Utama): The main idea is the central point the author wants to convey. It usually appears:

  • In the first paragraph (introduction)
  • In the last paragraph (conclusion)
  • Spread across the entire passage (implicit main idea)

Exam tip: If asked for the “gagasan utama,” look for the sentence that appears most frequently or is restated in different words throughout the passage.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

Developing systematic approach to passage analysis and question answering.

Systematic Reading Strategy:

  1. Preview (30 seconds): Read the title, first sentence, and any subheadings. Predict what the passage is about.
  2. Read actively (4–5 minutes): Mark key information: main ideas, transitions, author opinions, data/facts.
  3. Question analysis (1 minute): Read each question carefully. Identify whether it asks for: explicit information, implied meaning, vocabulary in context, or author’s purpose.
  4. Locate and answer (2 minutes): Find relevant sections, eliminate wrong answers, select the best answer.

Question Types and Strategies:

TypeWhat it asksStrategy
LiteralExplicit information stated in textFind the sentence, verify exact match
InferenceImplicit meaning, what author impliesSynthesize information, don’t over-generalize
VocabularyMeaning of word/phrase in contextUse surrounding context, not dictionary definition
PurposeWhy did author write this?Consider audience, tone, and structure
Tone/AttitudeWhat is author’s feeling?Look for emotional language, word choices

Transition Words to Watch:

  • Addition: moreover, furthermore, additionally, also, besides
  • Contrast: however, but, whereas, on the other hand, nevertheless
  • Cause/Effect: therefore, thus, consequently, as a result, because
  • Example: for example, for instance, such as, specifically
  • Conclusion: in conclusion, finally, overall, in summary, to sum up

Exam tip: For inference questions, eliminate answers that are too narrow (not supported), too broad (go beyond the passage), or too extreme (absolute language like “always” or “never”).

🔴 Extended — Deep Study (3mo+)

Mastery of complex passages, advanced inference, and time management.

Analyzing Complex Argument Structures:

In argumentative passages, identify:

  • Premis (Premise): The supporting evidence or reasons
  • tesis (Thesis): The main claim or position
  • Konklusi (Conclusion): What follows from the premises

Logical fallacies to detect in answer choices:

  1. Circular reasoning: Conclusion repeats premise in different words
  2. Hasty generalization: Small sample used to draw broad conclusion
  3. False cause (post hoc): Assumes A caused B just because A came before B
  4. Appeal to authority: Uses expert’s opinion as sole proof (without evidence)

Improving Reading Speed and Accuracy:

Practice with timed passages: target 5–6 minutes per passage (including questions).

  • 1st minute: Preview and predict
  • 2nd–4th minute: Read actively
  • 1st minute: Answer questions

Build vocabulary systematically: UTBK often tests words in context. Learn common academic word roots (Greek/Latin origins) to deduce meaning of unfamiliar terms.

Sample Passage Analysis:

Passage: “Indonesia memiliki kekayaan budaya yang sangat beragam. Dengan lebih dari 300 kelompok etnis dan 700 bahasa daerah, negara ini merupakan laboratorium budaya terbesar di dunia. Setiap kelompok memiliki tradisi, kesenian, dan sistem pengetahuan yang unik.”

Q: What is the main idea? A: Indonesia has extraordinary cultural diversity (the sentence that encompasses all supporting details)

Q: The word “laboratorium” in the passage means… A: A place for study/research (context: comparing Indonesia to a place where cultural research can be conducted)

Common Pitfalls:

  • Rereading the entire passage for each question (time-consuming — learn to locate)
  • Choosing the first answer that seems correct (always check all options)
  • Overthinking simple questions (the obvious answer is often correct)
  • Getting stuck on one question (move on, come back if time permits)

Exam tip: On UTBK, answer the easiest questions first. Flag difficult questions and return. Don’t let one difficult passage consume your entire time.
