Core Text Types and Their Skeletons

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your exam.

Topic 7 of Literasi Bahasa Indonesia UTBK/SNPMTN trains the skill of reading long, in many papers multimodal texts and extracting meaning at three levels: literal, inferential, and evaluative. The four text families you must recognise are teks prosedur kompleks (goal-oriented steps with markers such as langkah-langkah, selanjutnya), teks eksposisi (thesis–arguments–reinforcement, signalled by karena, oleh karena itu, dengan demikian), teks negosiasi (opening–offer–agreement/rejection–deal–closing), and teks sastra (puisi/prosa rich in majas and diksi). High-yield moves: locate the gagasan utama of each paragraph, distinguish fakta from opini, and follow konjungsi plus rujukan (kata ganti ia, mereka, hal itu) to preserve kohesi and koherensi. When a question asks for the tujuan komunikatif, look at the communicative context, not just the topic sentence.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

Standard content for students with a few days to months.

Core Text Types and Their Skeletons

  • Teks prosedur kompleks describes a sequenced method to achieve a specific outcome. Its linguistic markers are imperative verbs, pertama, kedua, kemudian, akhirnya, and conditional clauses jika… maka…. The main idea lies in the stated tujuan of the procedure.
  • Teks eksposisi aims to persuade by presenting an argument. Its structure is tesis → argumentasi → penegasan ulang. Tesis is the writer’s stand, argumentasi supplies the reasoning/data, and the penutup reinforces the stand. Conjunctions karena, sebab, oleh karena itu, dengan demikian, justru are the structural glue.
  • Teks negosiasi records a bargaining exchange. It contains the parties’ positions, offers, and concessions. The communicative purpose is reaching a kesepakatan, so any question about purpose should be answered in terms of the deal, not the conflict.
  • Teks sastra (puisi/prosa) foregrounds majas (e.g., metafora, personifikasi, hiperbola), diksi, and imagery. Meaning is in many papers implicit, so you must infer rather than paraphrase.

Reading Strategy for UTBK

  1. Skim to identify text type from its opening signals.
  2. Map paragraphs to a one-line summary each; this isolates the gagasan utama per paragraph.
  3. Track cohesion devices — konjungsi, rujukan, ellipsis — to link ideas across sentences.
  4. Mark facts vs opinions by looking for verifiable claims vs value-laden language (paling, seharusnya, terbaik).
  5. Answer inference questions by combining literal cues with world knowledge; never copy a sentence verbatim if the stem asks for makna tersirat.

Typical UTBK Question Patterns

  • “What is the main idea of paragraph 3?” → answer the most general sentence.
  • “The writer’s purpose in the second paragraph is to…” → match to communicative aim.
  • “Which statement is an opinion?” → flag evaluative adjectives.
  • “The word itu in line 12 refers to…” → resolve rujukan.

Edge Cases and Multimodal Traps

UTBK frequently pairs a long expository passage with a table, infographic, or footnote. The information needed can live in the visual, not the prose. Always scan captions, axis labels, and source notes before answering. In paired-text questions, you must compare two authors’ positions: identify where they agree, where they diverge, and which argument carries stronger evidence. For poetry, majas is rarely decorative — personification encodes the speaker’s attitude toward an abstract concept (e.g., calling kemerdekaan a burung yang terbang suggests aspiration, not captivity).

Common Mistakes

  • Treating the tesis as an argument; the tesis is the claim, arguments are the reasons.
  • Resolving anafora/katara by guessing the nearest noun instead of the grammatically and semantically correct antecedent.
  • Reading majas literally — mata hatinya menangis is about emotional pain, not tears from the eye.
  • Ignoring the closing move of a negotiation; the deal is the communicative payoff, not the dispute.
  • Answering “information stated implicitly” with a literal paraphrase.

Worked Example

A passage: “Pemanasan global bukan sekadar isu lingkungan, melainkan ancaman ekonomi. Data IPCC menunjukkan kenaikan suhu 1,1°C telah menekan produktivitas pertanian 3% di zona tropis. Karena itu, transisi energi bukan pilihan, melainkan keharusan.” Question: What is the writer’s main thesis? — Answer: energy transition is an economic necessity, not a choice. The marker karena itu signals that the statistic supports the thesis; the thesis itself sits in the opening sentence anchored by bukan… melainkan….

Practice Prompts

  1. Identify the fakta and opini in a 200-word editorial on online learning.
  2. Rewrite a stanza of a poem in bahasa sendiri without losing the majas’s connotation.
