World Geography

Continents and Oceans

The Seven Continents

ContinentArea (million km²)Key Features
Asia44.58Largest, most populous; Himalayas, highest peaks
Africa30.37Largest hot continent; Sahara Desert, Nile River
North America24.71Great Lakes, Mississippi River, Rocky Mountains
South America17.84Amazon rainforest, Andes, Amazon River
Antarctica14.2Ice-covered, no permanent population
Europe10.18Smallest by area after Australia; many countries
Australia8.53Smallest continent; Great Dividing Range, Great Barrier Reef

The Five Oceans

OceanKey Features
PacificLargest, deepest (Mariana Trench -10,994m); “Ring of Fire” volcanic belt
AtlanticSecond largest; Mid-Atlantic Ridge; busiest shipping lane
IndianBordered by Africa, Asia, Australia; monsoon winds
SouthernSurrounds Antarctica; defined as 60°S by most oceanographers
ArcticSmallest, shallowest; covered by sea ice (shrinking due to climate change)

Major Landforms

Mountains

Mountain RangeLocationKey Features
HimalayasAsia (India, Nepal, Bhutan, China)Highest (Everest 8,849m), 2,500 km long
AlpsEuropeMont Blanc (4,807m), across France, Switzerland, Italy, Austria
Rocky MountainsNorth America4,800 km from Canada to New Mexico
AndesSouth AmericaLongest continental mountain chain (7,000 km); Aconcagua (6,959m)
Ural MountainsRussiaTraditional boundary between Europe and Asia
Hindu KushAfghanistan/PakistanPamir knot, extends into Karakoram
KarakoramIndia/Pakistan/ChinaK2 (8,611m) — second highest in the world

Major Rivers

RiverLength (km)LocationFlows Into
Nile6,650AfricaMediterranean Sea
Amazon6,400South AmericaAtlantic Ocean
Yangtze (Chang Jiang)6,300ChinaEast China Sea
Mississippi-Missouri6,275USAGulf of Mexico

Ganga2,525India/BangladeshBay of Bengal

Deserts

DesertArea (million km²)LocationKey Features
Sahara9.2North AfricaLargest hot desert; covers 31% of Africa
Arabian2.33Arabian PeninsulaSand dunes, extremely hot
Gobi1.29China/MongoliaCold desert; temperate latitude
Thar0.32India/PakistanLargest in India
Kalahari0.9Southern AfricaSemi-arid, not completely dry
Atacama0.105ChileDriest non-polar desert on Earth
Antarctic14.2AntarcticaLargest desert (cold)

Latitude and Longitude

Key Lines of Latitude

LineLatitudeSignificance
EquatorDivides Earth into Northern and Southern hemispheres
Tropic of Cancer23.5°NNorthern limit of the Sun being directly overhead
Tropic of Capricorn23.5°SSouthern limit
Arctic Circle66.5°NSouthern limit of polar day/night
Antarctic Circle66.5°SNorthern limit of polar day/night

Tropical zone: Between Tropic of Cancer and Tropic of Capricorn (23.5°N–23.5°S) — Sun can be directly overhead at some point during the year.

Temperate zones: Between 23.5° and 66.5° in both hemispheres.

Polar zones: Above 66.5° — experiences polar day and polar night.

Key Meridians

MeridianLongitudeSignificance
Prime MeridianPasses through Greenwich, London — defines UTC
180° Meridian180°International Date Line (approximately)
82.5°E82.5°EIndia’s standard meridian

Indian Standard Time (IST): 82.5°E meridian — 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of GMT (UTC+5:30).

Longitude and time: 15° of longitude = 1 hour (24 × 15 = 360°). Moving east, time increases; moving west, time decreases.

Important Straits and Canals

Straits

StraitConnectingLocation
Strait of MalaccaIndian Ocean ↔ Pacific OceanBetween Sumatra (Indonesia) and Malaysia — one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes
HormuzPersian Gulf ↔ Gulf of OmanIran/Oman — critical oil transport route (20% of world oil)
BosporusBlack Sea ↔ Sea of MarmaraTurkey — separates Europe and Asia
DardanellesSea of Marmara ↔ Aegean SeaTurkey — controls entry to Black Sea
GibraltarAtlantic Ocean ↔ Mediterranean SeaSpain/Morocco — strategic importance
Suez CanalMediterranean Sea ↔ Red SeaEgypt — shortcut between Europe and Asia

Canals

CanalCountryConnectsLengthKey Significance
Suez CanalEgyptMediterranean ↔ Red Sea193 kmShortest route between Europe and Asia; saves 7-10 days
Panama CanalPanamaAtlantic ↔ Pacific Ocean82 kmSaves 12,000 km journey around South America

Climate Zones

Types of Climate (Köppen Classification)

TypeCharacteristicsExamples
A (Tropical)Hot, humid, heavy rainfall year-roundAmazon basin, Congo, SE Asia
B (Dry/Arid)Very low rainfallSahara, Arabian, Thar deserts
C (Temperate)Mild winters, warm summersMediterranean, parts of Europe, eastern USA
D (Continental)Hot summers, cold wintersRussia, central USA, northern China
E (Polar)Extremely cold, permafrostAntarctica, Greenland, Siberia

Monsoon System

The monsoon system is most prominent in South and Southeast Asia — seasonal reversal of wind patterns brings heavy summer rainfall. Caused by differential heating of land and sea (thermal gradient).
