📋 Exam Pattern

Written + MCQ: Mathematics(100 marks), Physics(50 marks), Chemistry(50 marks), English(25 marks). Total 225 marks. Shortlisted candidates then appear for viva voce. The examination is held in Dhaka and other divisional cities simultaneously.

What is BUET and how does its admission work?

BUET (Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology) is Bangladesh's premier and most prestigious engineering university, consistently ranked #1 in Bangladesh for engineering education. BUET admits students through a centralised university admission test conducted annually after HSC. Students from the Science background in HSC (or equivalent) are eligible. BUET offers undergraduate programmes in Civil, Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Architecture, and several other engineering disciplines. BUET is highly competitive — approximately 100,000+ students appear for the BUET admission test each year, competing for around 1,500 seats.

What is the BUET admission test pattern?

The BUET admission test consists of 100 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 3 hours. The questions come from three subjects: Physics (approximately 35 questions), Chemistry (approximately 35 questions), and Mathematics (approximately 30 questions) — all covering the HSC/equivalent syllabus. Each wrong answer carries negative marking (-0.25 per wrong answer). The total marks for the exam vary by year but typically range between 100–120. The exam is conducted in a single sitting on the same day across BUET's campus in Dhaka. After the written test, a separate viva voce may be conducted for Architecture applicants.

What rank do I need for BUET admission?

To get into BUET through the general merit list, you typically need to be in the top 1,000 ranks out of 100,000+ applicants. For the most popular departments (Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical & Electronic Engineering), you generally need a rank within the top 100–200. BUET uses a weighted aggregate score based on: SSC/HSC GPA (or equivalent, worth significant weight) + the BUET admission test score. A combined rank is then prepared and used for department allocation during counselling. Students from all over Bangladesh compete — domicile does not provide an advantage.
