General Science for UPPSC RO/ARO covers Physics, Chemistry and Biology at the NCERT Class 6–12 level, split across Paper I (General Studies). Expect ~15–20 factual MCQs that reward clarity of basic definitions over advanced derivation. High-yield areas: Newton’s three laws, Ohm’s law (V = IR), pH = −log[H⁺], Mendel’s monohybrid cross (3:1 ratio), and the cell organelles (mitochondria = powerhouse). Memorise SI base units (m, kg, s, A, K, mol, cd) and the seven derived quantities they spawn. Scope of the Paper
Paper I of the UPPSC RO/ARO Preliminary Examination devotes a sizeable slice to General Science (sometimes labelled General Knowledge of Science). Difficulty stops at the higher-secondary textbook; no engineering-level thermodynamics or organic reaction mechanisms are tested.
Physics Essentials
Units and Motion. Kinematics rests on three equations for uniformly accelerated motion:
- v = u + at
- s = ut + ½at²
- v² = u² + 2as where u is initial velocity (m/s), v final velocity, a acceleration (m/s²), s displacement, t time. Newton’s second law F = ma ties force, mass and acceleration; weight = mg uses g ≈ 9.8 m/s².
Work, Energy, Power. Work W = F·s·cosθ, kinetic energy KE = ½mv², potential energy PE = mgh, power P = W/t = Fv. Mechanical energy is conserved in absence of friction.
Heat. Specific heat capacity enters Q = mcΔT (Q in joules, c in J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹). Three modes of heat transfer: conduction, convection, radiation.
Light and Sound. Reflection obeys angle of incidence = angle of reflection; refraction follows Snell’s law: n₁ sinθ₁ = n₂ sinθ₂. Sound needs a medium; speed in air ≈ 343 m/s.
Electricity. Ohm’s law V = IR; power dissipated P = VI = I²R = V²/R. In series, R_total = R₁ + R₂ + …; current is the same. In parallel, 1/R_total = Σ(1/Rᵢ); voltage is the same.
Chemistry Essentials
Atomic structure: nucleus contains protons (+1) and neutrons (0); electrons (−1) orbit in shells (2, 8, 8, 18…). Atomic number Z defines the element.
Bonding: ionic (metal + non-metal, electron transfer), covalent (non-metals share pairs), coordinate (one atom donates both electrons).
Acids, Bases, Salts: pH = −log₁₀[H⁺]; pH 7 neutral, <7 acidic, >7 basic. Common acids: HCl (stomach acid), H₂SO₄, CH₃COOH (vinegar). Common bases: NaOH, KOH, NH₄OH.
Biology Essentials
Cell: basic structural unit; mitochondria generate ATP, ribosomes synthesise protein, nucleus stores DNA. Plant cells add chloroplasts (photosynthesis) and a cell wall (cellulose).
Genetics: Mendel monohybrid cross → phenotypic ratio 3:1, genotypic 1:2:1. DNA is a double helix (Watson–Crick, 1953); RNA is single-stranded.
Human Physiology: blood circulates via heart → arteries → capillaries → veins. Oxygenated blood is in the left side. Digestion begins in the mouth (salivary amylase), protein digested in stomach (pepsin), absorption mainly in the small intestine.

Edge Cases and Examiner Traps
Sign conventions in thermodynamics. Use Q = ΔU + W, where Q is heat added to the system, W is work done by the system, ΔU is change in internal energy. Mixing these signs is a frequent distractor.
pH versus pOH. At 25 °C, pH + pOH = 14. A solution with [H⁺] = 10⁻³ M has pH = 3 and pOH = 11 — students often invert.
Series–parallel hybrids. A household circuit is parallel (each appliance gets 220 V); fuses and ammeters are in series. Voltmeters are always connected in parallel with the component.
Reflection vs Refraction. Reflection returns light to the same medium; refraction bends it at the boundary. A convex lens converges (forms real, inverted image beyond 2F; virtual magnified at object distance <F). A concave lens always forms a virtual, erect, diminished image on the same side as the object.
Genetic confusions. Dominant allele expresses even in heterozygous state; recessive needs homozygosity. Phenotype = observable trait; genotype = genetic makeup. Sickle-cell carriers (HbAS) are heterozygous — phenotype normal, genotype carrier.

Micro-Worked Example
A 2 Ω and 4 Ω resistor are connected in parallel across a 12 V battery. Find total current.
- 1/R = 1/2 + 1/4 = 3/4 → R_eq = 4/3 Ω ≈ 1.33 Ω.
- Total current I = V/R = 12 ÷ (4/3) = 9 A.
- Power dissipated by 2 Ω resistor: P = V²/R = 144/2 = 72 W.
Practice Prompts
- A homozygous tall pea plant (TT) is crossed with a homozygous dwarf (tt). Work out the F₂ phenotypic and genotypic ratios from the F₁ self-cross.
- Calculate the pH of a solution whose [H⁺] = 4 × 10⁻⁵ M and state whether it is acidic, neutral, or basic.
