Must-Know Areas

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your UNDANA admission test.

Topic 9 tests language competency in Bahasa Indonesia and English at SMA/sederajat level. It contributes roughly 3% of the total admission score, so even a few correct answers can shift ranking near the cut-off.

Must-Know Areas

  • Sinonim, antonim, dan makna kata (synonyms, antonyms, contextual meaning) in Indonesian and English.
  • Kalimat efektif (effective sentences): parallelism, concision, logical cohesion, and avoidance of redundancy.
  • Ejaan yang disempurnakan / PUEBI: capitalisation of proper nouns, correct comma use in compound sentences, and standard affixation.
  • English basics: tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles (a/an/the), prepositions, and singular/plural third-person forms.
  • Reading comprehension of short factual and narrative passages, including cloze-type fill-in-the-blank vocabulary.

High-Yield Pointers

  • Always re-read the surrounding sentence before choosing a synonym — near-synonyms like pengaruh vs dampak are context-dependent.
  • For cloze items, test collocational fit, not answer length; the shortest option is often correct.
  • In English error-spotting, the verb almost always carries the error when the subject is third-person singular.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

Standard content for students with a few days to months of preparation.

Bahasa Indonesia: Tata Bahasa dan Kosakata

UNDANA’s Indonesian items frequently probe persamaan kata, lawan kata, and makna kata sesuai konteks. A solid approach is to learn roots and standard affixes (me-, pe-, -an, -kan, -i) so that new words can be decoded on the spot.

The second frequent format is kalimat efektif: candidates must pick the option that is parallel, concise, and free of redundancy. A sentence with double subjects, mixed tenses, or a dangling participle is automatically non-effective.

Ejaan yang Disempurnakan (PUEBI)

PUEBI rules tested include capitalisation of proper nouns and the first word of a sentence, correct use of commas before conjunctions in compound sentences, and the spelling of borrowed words such as kualitas, aktual, kategori. Memorise the small set of words that are still written with *e/u/ foreign spelling.

English: Grammar and Usage

English items centre on tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions. A typical stem reads, “The committee ____ its decision yesterday,” testing the simple past against a tempting present perfect. Articles (a/an/the) and prepositions (in, on, at, to, for) are tested through short cloze sentences rather than abstract rules.

Reading Comprehension

Passages are short (100–180 words), factual or narrative. Expect one or two inference questions alongside literal recall. Underline the pronoun’s referent and the contrast marker (however, although, whereas) before answering.

🔴 Extended — Deep Study (3mo+)

Comprehensive coverage for students on a longer study timeline.

Edge Cases in Near-Synonym Distinctions

The hardest sinonim items pair words with overlapping but non-identical meanings. Pengaruh refers to a causal force that shapes opinion or behaviour, while dampak emphasises a tangible consequence, often negative. Efek leans toward scientific or technical outcomes. When the stem mentions kebijakan pemerintah or peraturan baru, dampak is usually the safer pick; for pendapat masyarakat, pengaruh fits better.

Effective-Sentence Traps

Examiners test four recurring defects: (1) subjek ganda (double subject, e.g., Para siswa mereka pergi), (2) predikat yang tidak sejalan (mismatched predicate form), (3) klausa berlebihan (redundant clauses), and (4) kohesi yang lemah (weak cohesion, e.g., karena itu, sehingga). The fix is to keep one subject, one parallel predicate, and one logical connector.

English Error-Spotting Mechanism

In “find the incorrect word” items, scan in this order: verb (tense/agreement) → article → preposition → pronoun → word form. Roughly 60% of UNDANA-level English errors hide in the verb slot, especially the third-person singular -s in present simple (He goHe goes) and the past form of irregular verbs.

Connections to Adjacent Topics

Topic 9 reinforces reading stamina needed for sains and soshum passages elsewhere in the UNDANA paper. Vocabulary from this topic overlaps with penalaran umum items, where synonym substitution is a standard distractor.

Practice Prompts

  1. Choose the most effective rewrite: “Para guru-guru sedang membahas mengenai tentang kurikulum baru di sekolah.”
  2. Identify the error: “Each of the students have submitted their assignment before the deadline.”

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Choosing the longest answer option on cloze items instead of testing collocational fit.
  • Translating English idioms literally into Indonesian when the stem asks for a contextual equivalent.
  • Applying me- and di- affixes by ear rather than by rule (menulis but ditulis, not di-tulis).
