Paragraf

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Definition and Structure

A paragraph (paragraf) is a unit of thought containing one topic sentence (kalimat pokok) that holds the main idea, supported by several supporting sentences (kalimat penjelas). The topic sentence functions as the controlling idea — it governs what can and cannot appear in the paragraph. Every supporting sentence must relate directly to this controlling idea.

Classification by Position of Topic Sentence

TypeStructureCommon Signal
DeduktifTopic sentence first, then supporting detailsPada dasarnya,…
InduktifSupporting details first, topic sentence as conclusionJadi,… / Dengan demikian,…
CampuranTopic sentence appears at both beginning and end

Classification by Purpose

  • Narasi — recounts events chronologically
  • Deskripsi — depicts characteristics, appearance, or conditions
  • Eksposisi — provides information or explanation
  • Argumentasi — convinces through logical reasoning
  • Persuasi — motivates action through appeal

Coherence and Cohesion

A good paragraph is koheren (logically ordered ideas) and kohesif (connected by appropriate transitional words). Transitional markers — selain itu, sebaliknya, oleh karena itu, lebih lanjut — signal relationships between sentences. Failing to use them creates a choppy, disorganized paragraph.

Exam pattern: UNDANA entrance questions in standard papers present a paragraph and ask students to identify the main idea, the topic sentence, or the paragraph type. The key is to locate the sentence that can stand alone as a summary — the other sentences exist only to support it.

Identifying the Topic Sentence in Mixed Paragraphs

Some paragraphs open with a topic sentence, develop it through several supporting sentences, then restate the main idea in different words at the end (campuran). In such cases, the closing sentence is not merely decorative — it reinforces the controlling idea. Students in many papers mistakenly treat the closing sentence as a new main idea, creating false duplication.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Treating an opinion statement as a supporting sentence. A sentence expressing personal judgment (“Menurut saya, kebijakan ini merugikan”) is in standard papers the topic sentence, not a supporting detail, because it controls the paragraph’s direction.
  2. Confusing narasi with deskripsi. Narasi requires a sequence of events and a time dimension; deskripsi arranges details spatially or through sensory description. A paragraph describing a beach at sunset without event progression is deskripsi, not narasi.
  3. Over-relying on keyword matching. The topic sentence can not contain the most frequent words from the paragraph. Instead, test by asking: “Can this sentence stand as a standalone summary?” If not, it is supporting.

Edge Case: Paragraphs Without an Explicit Topic Sentence

Expository and narrative paragraphs sometimes omit the topic sentence entirely, especially in literary texts where the main idea is implied through accumulated details. In such cases, students must infer the main idea by synthesizing the collective meaning of all sentences. This inference skill is directly tested in UNDANA reading comprehension sections.

Practice Prompts

  1. Given a 120-word paragraph in Bahasa Indonesia, identify the type (deduktif/induktif/campuran) and locate the exact sentence number of the topic sentence. Explain your reasoning in 2–3 sentences.
  2. Write a deduktif paragraph about “Pentingnya menjaga kebersihan lingkungan” consisting of exactly 5 sentences: 1 topic sentence and 4 supporting sentences. Underline the topic sentence and circle the transitional words used.
