Ranking — Key Facts for SSC CGL • Ranking problems ask you to determine a person’s position in a row from either the top/bottom (vertical) or left/right (horizontal). • Essential Formulas (when total is known):

  • Person’s position from top = Total − (position from bottom − 1)
  • Person’s position from bottom = Total − (position from top − 1)
  • If A is $n$th from one end and $m$th from the other, and $n + m - 1 > \text{Total}$ → A is not in the row (the rows are different)
  • If $n + m - 1 = \text{Total}$ → A’s position from both ends uniquely determines the row • Interchange type: When A and B swap positions, the total shifts by $(B_{\text{new}} - B_{\text{old}})$. • When two persons change places, the difference in their positions before and after tells you the gap between them.

Exam Tip: Always represent the row as a simple numbered line (1, 2, 3…). If you’re told “A is 8th from the left and 12th from the right,” find total = 8 + 12 − 1 = 19 people. This one formula solves most straightforward ranking questions in under 30 seconds.

Core Concept: Ranking problems require you to determine individual positions within a group when given relative positions. The key is converting directional position (e.g., “7th from left”) into a numeric index, and using the relationship between top/bottom or left/right positions.

Standard Formulas:

  1. Total from One End to the Other: $$\text{Total} = \text{Position from Left} + \text{Position from Right} - 1$$

  2. Finding Position When Total Is Known: $$\text{Position from top} = \text{Total} - \text{Position from bottom} + 1$$

Worked Example 1 (Basic Ranking): In a class of 40 students, Rahul ranks 15th from the top. What is his rank from the bottom?

  • Rahul’s position from bottom = Total − Position from top + 1 = 40 − 15 + 1 = 26th from bottom

Worked Example 2 (Finding Total): In a queue, A is 18th from the front and 29th from the back. How many people are in the queue?

  • Total = 18 + 29 − 1 = 46 people

Worked Example 3 (Interchange/Ranking Shift): In a row of boys, Amit is 12th from the left and Raman is 18th from the right. After Amit and Raman swap places, Amit becomes 20th from the left. Find the total number of boys.

  • Let total = N. Original position of Amit = 12th from left. After swap, Amit is 20th from left → Raman’s original position = 20th from left (because they swapped).
  • Raman’s original position from right = 18th → Raman’s original position from left = N − 18 + 1 = N − 17.
  • Equating: N − 17 = 20 → N = 37. Total boys = 37.

Common Student Mistakes: Forgetting the “-1” in the total formula, which causes the row to be one person too long. In interchange problems, mixing up who moved where when calculating the shift.

Theoretical Foundation: Ranking questions test logical sequencing and spatial awareness. SSC CGL has consistently asked 1-3 ranking questions per Tier-I exam between 2019 and 2023. The topic often combines with blood relations (e.g., “A is 5th from the left in a row of 15 people, and A’s mother is 3rd from the right”) and with age problems.

Advanced Ranking Variants:

  1. Multiple Row Ranking: Students sit in two rows facing each other. A is 4th from the left in Row 1 and faces B. B is 6th from the right in Row 2 and faces A. Find the distance between them if each seat is 1.5 m apart. → Draw both rows, mark positions, count the seats between them horizontally.

  2. Cumulative Ranking: A is 8th from the top in a class. 6 students are added. A is now $n$th from the top. Simply add the number of new students above or below to adjust.

  3. Ranking with Overlapping Groups: In a row of 50 people, A is 20th from the left and B is 35th from the left. C is exactly between them. Find C’s position. → Positions between: 21, 22, …, 34 (14 positions). C is the 7th person from either end within this group: position = 20 + 7 = 27th from left

  4. Weight/Height Ranking: “A is heavier than B. B is heavier than C. D is lighter than C.” This is a linear ordering problem (ranking by attribute, not position in a row). Solve by building a chain: A > B > C > D.

SSC CGL PYQ Pattern (2019-2023):

  • 2023 Tier-I: 2 questions — basic ranking formula + interchange type
  • 2022 Tier-I: 1 question — height/weight ordering
  • 2021 Tier-I: 2 questions — standard row ranking + overlapping group
  • Difficulty is usually moderate; interchange problems are slightly harder
  • Most common trap: When A and B swap, and you’re told only the new position of A — you must realise B occupied A’s original position before the swap

Practice Strategy: Master the interchange formula thoroughly — it appears in almost every SSC CGL Tier-I. Write out the row with positions labelled before and after swap to visualise the shift. Avoid shortcuts until you’ve drawn the row at least 5 times.
