Seating Arrangements is the Analytical Reasoning sub-topic where candidates decode the spatial order of people (and occasionally objects) around linear rows, circular or hexagonal tables, rectangular dual-row grids, or facing-centre circles, using only the written clues. Success depends on translating every sentence into a fixed positional relation — left of, right of, opposite, immediate neighbour, or between — before drawing the frame.

The fastest solving tool is the directional grid method: anchor one person to a definite seat from an absolute clue (e.g., “A sits at the left end” or “P faces the centre from the north seat”), then layer each relative clue onto that frame.

  • Anchor first with an absolute clue, never start with a relative clue.
  • Mirror left-right when the circle is facing the centre — your right becomes the viewer’s left.
  • Use gender/profession filters to eliminate options before full placement.

Core Setup Logic

Every seating puzzle reduces to six positional relations: immediate left, immediate right, second-to-left, opposite, end-of-row, and between. A clue such as “B sits immediately to the left of C” places B and C adjacent in that exact order. A weaker clue such as “D sits two places to the right of E” only fixes their relative gap, not their absolute seat, so the frame must already have an anchor before such clues become useful.

Frame-Building Order

The reliable sequence is: (1) extract every definite-position clue, (2) place those people in the diagram, (3) attach relative clues one by one, (4) apply qualitative filters (gender, profession, hobby) last to disambiguate. Reversing this order is the single most common reason candidates run out of time on NAT-I.

Grid Method for Circular and Facing-Centre Tables

For unidirectional circles, treat two diametrically opposite seats as the axis and slot the known person there. When the puzzle specifies facing the centre, the rule flips: a person sitting to your right is actually on the viewer’s left, because you and the viewer face opposite directions.

  • Always count seats clockwise from the anchor; anticlockwise counts only when stated.
  • Two-row rectangular: align front and back rows column-wise, back-row person sits directly behind the front-row person.
  • When two arrangements are both consistent, the answer is the one uniquely determined by every clue.

Edge Cases and Mirror Traps

Circular arrangements admit mirror-image ambiguity: a clockwise order A-B-C-D is indistinguishable from the anticlockwise order A-D-C-B unless a facing-direction clue breaks the symmetry. Candidates routinely lose marks by treating two mirror layouts as distinct, or by treating two genuinely different layouts as identical because they ignored the facing rule.

Integrating Qualitative Filters

Blood-relations, profession, nationality, and hobby clues rarely place a person directly; instead they narrow the candidate pool. The efficient move is to build a small elimination table on scratch paper and cross off anyone who violates a gender/profession constraint before attempting the seat diagram. This compresses a 6-person permutation (720 possibilities) to a handful within seconds.

Worked Micro-Example

Six friends — A, B, C, D, E, F — sit around a circle facing the centre. A sits opposite D. B sits immediately to the right of A. C is not adjacent to D. F sits between E and B.

Placing A at the north seat facing the centre, D goes south. Facing-centre rule: B at A’s right means B is on the viewer’s left, so B sits west. C cannot be east or south, leaving north-east or south-west as options; the “F between E and B” clue forces the unique layout: clockwise from A — A, B, F, D, E, C.
