Reading Comprehension

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Rapid summary of reading comprehension strategies for NABTEB English.

Reading comprehension tests your ability to understand, analyse, and interpret written passages.

The SQ3R Method:

  1. Survey — Read title, introduction, first paragraph quickly
  2. Question — Ask what the passage is about
  3. Read — Read carefully, noting key points
  4. Recite — Summarise each paragraph in your own words
  5. Review — Check understanding against questions

Key Comprehension Skills:

  1. Literal comprehension — What the text explicitly states
  2. Inference — Drawing conclusions not directly stated
  3. Vocabulary in context — Determining word meaning
  4. Main idea — The central theme
  5. Evaluation — Judging argument strength

Types of Questions:

  • Factual: Explicit information from passage
  • Inference: Implies, suggests, concludes
  • Vocabulary: Meaning of words in passage
  • Purpose: Why author included information
  • Tone: Author’s attitude (critical, sympathetic, neutral)

NABTEB Exam Tip: Always answer from the passage ONLY. Do not bring in outside knowledge. If the passage doesn’t support an answer, it is wrong.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

For NABTEB students who want to improve comprehension accuracy.

How to Approach a Passage:

First Reading: Read through once without stopping. Understand overall meaning and main idea.

Ask: What is this passage about? Who is the audience? What is the author’s purpose?

Second Reading: Re-read with questions in mind. Mark key sentences and transitions.

Answering Questions:

Factual Questions: Locate relevant section, re-read carefully. Answer is directly stated.

Inference Questions: Answer not directly stated but strongly supported. Look for language that implies.

Vocabulary in Context: Use surrounding sentences. Look for comparisons, contrasts, or explanations.

Evaluating Arguments:

  1. Is evidence credible and relevant?
  2. Are conclusions logically derived?
  3. Has author addressed counterarguments?
  4. Are there logical fallacies?

Common Pitfalls:

  • Selecting an answer true in real life but NOT supported by passage
  • Misreading negative words (NOT, EXCEPT, LEAST)
  • Rushing and missing key information
  • Choosing most correct answer rather than best-supported

🔴 Extended — Deep Study (3mo+)

Comprehensive techniques for mastering reading comprehension on NABTEB.

Understanding Text Structure:

  1. Chronological: Events in time sequence (first, then, next, finally)
  2. Compare/Contrast: Two subjects examined (on the other hand, unlike, similarly)
  3. Cause/Effect: One event leads to another (because, therefore, consequently)
  4. Problem/Solution: Issue presented, solutions proposed
  5. Generalisation/Example: Broad statement with specific examples

Advanced Inference Techniques:

  • Direct inference: Information implied within one paragraph
  • Sequential inference: Follow a logical chain through the passage
  • Synthesising inference: Combine ideas from different parts
  • Implicative inference: Tone or style suggests something

Evaluating Tone:

ToneDescriptionClues
ObjectiveNeutral, unbiasedFacts, no emotional language
CriticalFinding faultNegative language, sarcasm
SympatheticUnderstandingEmpathetic language
UrgentPressingTime-sensitive language
HumorousComicExaggeration, unexpected comparisons
FormalAcademicTechnical vocabulary

Argument Analysis:

  1. Identify the Claim: What is the author’s main point?
  2. Identify the Evidence: What supports the claim?
  3. Evaluate the Reasoning: Are premises connected to conclusion?
  4. Identify Counterarguments: How has author responded?
  5. Check for Fallacies: Hasty generalisation, false cause, appeal to emotion?

NABTEB Passage Types:

  1. Narrative Passages — stories, personal accounts Strategy: Focus on plot, characters, themes

  2. Expository Passages — informational, explanatory Strategy: Follow logical organisation, identify main points

  3. Persuasive/Argumentative Passages — opinion pieces, editorials Strategy: Evaluate evidence, identify author’s stance

  4. Descriptive Passages — detailed descriptions Strategy: Note specific details, sensory language

⚡ NABTEB Strategy:

  1. Read title and introductory material first
  2. Read passage once for overall meaning
  3. Glance at questions to know what to look for
  4. Re-read, underlining key information
  5. Answer factual questions first (easy to locate)
  6. Save inference questions for last
  7. Re-read relevant section before selecting
  8. Eliminate unsupported answers
