Topic 8

Part of the IJMB (Nigeria) study roadmap. Subject Combinations topic subjec-008 of Subject Combinations.

Engineering and Technology Sciences Through IJMB

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your exam.

Engineering is Nigeria’s most prestigious and demanding career path — and IJMB provides a Direct Entry route into every engineering programme at Nigerian universities. The key is the right subject combination: Physics and Mathematics at credit level (or above) are non-negotiable for any engineering programme.

The essential combination for Engineering:

  • Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (PCM): This is the universal combination that unlocks all engineering programmes across Nigeria

Exam tip: Even if you take a fourth subject like Further Mathematics or Geography, your Physics and Mathematics grades are what matter most. A grade A in both Physics and Mathematics will open doors at even the most competitive universities.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

Standard content for students with a few days to months.

Understanding Engineering Through IJMB:

Engineering is the application of scientific and mathematical principles to design, build, and maintain structures, machines, and systems. In Nigeria, engineering programmes are offered in faculties of Engineering at universities and polytechnics, and the profession is regulated by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Why Engineering is a Top Career Choice:

  • Nigeria has a massive infrastructure deficit — roads, bridges, power plants, housing — all need engineers
  • Engineers earn among the highest starting salaries in Nigeria
  • Engineering graduates are sought by oil and gas companies, banks, consulting firms, and government
  • Engineering skills are globally portable — Nigerian engineers work worldwide

Branches of Engineering:

Civil Engineering

The design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure — roads, bridges, buildings, dams, airports, water supply systems.

What you study:

  • Structural Engineering: Design of buildings, bridges, towers (strength of materials, structural analysis)
  • Geotechnical Engineering: Soil mechanics, foundation design
  • Highway Engineering: Road design, traffic engineering, pavement materials
  • Water Resources Engineering: Dams, irrigation, flood control
  • Construction Management: Project planning, cost estimation, contract management

Universities with top Civil Engineering programmes:

  • University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN): 9 points
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN): 9 points
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO): 12 points
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU): 9 points

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Universities with top Electrical Engineering:

  • University of Lagos (UNILAG): 10 points; best for telecommunications and electronics
  • University of Ibadan (UI): 9 points; strong in power and control
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO): 12 points; excellent reputation
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN): 9 points

Mechanical Engineering

The design, construction, and operation of machines and mechanical systems.

What you study:

  • Thermodynamics: Heat engines, refrigeration, power cycles
  • Fluid Mechanics: Pumps, turbines, fluid flow in pipes
  • Strength of Materials: How materials behave under stress
  • Manufacturing Engineering: Machining, casting, welding, 3D printing
  • Automotive Engineering: Engine design, vehicle dynamics
  • Robotics and Automation

Universities with top Mechanical Engineering:

  • University of Benin (UNIBEN): 10 points
  • University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN): 9 points
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO): 12 points
  • Ahmadu Bello University (ABU): 9 points

Petroleum Engineering

The exploration, extraction, and processing of oil and natural gas.

Why this is Nigeria’s highest-paying engineering discipline:

  • Nigeria has significant oil and gas reserves (37.5 billion barrels of oil equivalent)
  • Major employers: NNPC, Shell, Chevron, ExxonMobil, Total, Agip, Schlumberger, Baker Hughes
  • Graduates often work abroad (Gulf of Mexico, North Sea, Middle East)

What you study:

  • Petroleum Geology: Reservoir formation, rock properties
  • Drilling Engineering: Well design, drilling operations
  • Production Engineering: Maximising oil and gas recovery
  • Reservoir Engineering: Simulation of underground reservoirs
  • Natural Gas Engineering: Processing and transport of gas

Universities for Petroleum Engineering:

  • University of Petroleum Resources (Effurun, Delta State): 10 points
  • Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO): 12 points
  • University of Benin (UNIBEN): 10 points
  • University of Port Harcourt (UNIPO): 9 points

Chemical Engineering

The application of chemistry to industrial processes — refining, petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, food processing.

What you study:

  • Chemical Process Principles: Mass and energy balances
  • Thermodynamics: Chemical thermodynamics, phase equilibria
  • Reaction Engineering: Chemical kinetics, reactor design
  • Transport Phenomena: Fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transfer
  • Process Control and Instrumentation

Admission Requirements for Engineering Through IJMB:

O’Level Requirements (Non-negotiable)

For engineering in ANY Nigerian university:

  • 5 credits in SSCE/WAEC/NECO including:
    • English Language
    • Mathematics (very important — cannot be waived)
    • Physics
    • Chemistry
    • Any other science subject (Biology, Further Mathematics, or Technical Science)

Note: If you do not have Mathematics at O’Level, you cannot be admitted to any engineering programme in Nigeria — even with perfect IJMB scores.

JAMB UTME Requirements for Direct Entry

  • You must still register JAMB and apply for Direct Entry
  • Your JAMB score does not matter as much as your IJMB score for Direct Entry, but you must pass JAMB’s DE screening

University-Specific Cutoffs for Engineering (2024 Data):

UniversityCourseMin IJMB PointsPhysicsMath

Important Note on JAMB and Direct Entry: Even as a Direct Entry candidate via IJMB, you must:

  1. Register JAMB and choose “Direct Entry” as your programme type
  2. Select your preferred universities and courses
  3. Wait for universities to screen your IJMB results
  4. If admitted through JAMB CAPS, accept your admission

Some universities also require you to take their post-DE screening examination.

The Role of Further Mathematics in Engineering: Further Mathematics (available in WAEC and NECO) is an asset but not always required. Having Further Mathematics demonstrates stronger mathematical ability — some universities use it as a tiebreaker when two candidates have the same points.

What Happens in Your First Year (200 Level) of Engineering: Engineering 200 Level typically includes:

  • Engineering Mathematics I and II
  • Engineering Physics
  • Engineering Chemistry
  • Introduction to Computer Programming
  • Technical Drawing / Engineering Drawing
  • Workshop Practice
  • Engineering Mechanics (Statics)
