Which sections make up the GMAT exam and how is time distributed across them?
The GMAT comprises four computer-adaptive sections. Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) tests one argument essay in 30 minutes. Integrated Reasoning (IR) includes multi-source reasoning, table analysis, graphics interpretation, and two-part analysis across 12 questions in 30 minutes. Quantitative Reasoning carries 36 questions spanning arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and data sufficiency—candidates have 62 minutes. Verbal Reasoning also has 36 questions covering reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction within 62 minutes. Total seat time, including two optional breaks, is 3 hours 7 minutes. Source: mba.com
What is the scoring range for the GMAT and what score do top business schools expect?
The combined Verbal and Quantitative score spans from 205 to 805, in 5-point increments, with the Analytical Writing Assessment scored separately on a 0–6 scale (half-point increments). Integrated Reasoning is scored 1–8 independently. Most M7 and top-20 schools publish medians in the 650–710 range. A score of 655+ places a candidate near the 85th percentile globally. Candidates can preview their unofficial Quantitative and Verbal scores immediately after the exam before deciding whether to accept or cancel them. Source: mba.com
What is the registration fee for the GMAT in 2026 and what additional costs should candidates budget for?
The GMAT exam fee is $275 USD for test center delivery, covering registration, the exam itself, and score reports sent to up to five programs of your choice. Sending scores to additional schools costs $35 per report, payable at the time of request after your test date. Rescheduling within 1–60 days before the appointment carries a $150 fee; cancellations within this window are non-refundable. Online proctoring incurs a separate $300 fee where available. Candidates scheduling from India should account for INR conversion and a non-refundable $10 booking fee levied by certain test centers. Source: mba.com
How does the computer-adaptive format affect question selection and scoring on the GMAT?
The GMAT engine selects each Verbal and Quantitative question dynamically based on your performance on the previous item—correct answers trigger harder items, while mistakes route you to easier ones. This means a candidate answering fewer difficult questions correctly can still earn a lower score even with a high accuracy rate on easy items. The AWA and IR sections are not adaptive in this manner; all IR questions are presented regardless of performance. To earn a score above 700, candidates typically need to sustain accuracy on questions assessed at high difficulty. Source: mba.com
How frequently can a candidate retake the GMAT, and how long are scores valid for applications?
GMAT scores remain valid for five years from the test date, after which they expire and cannot be reported to schools. Regarding retake policy, candidates may schedule another attempt once every 16 calendar days. Within any rolling 12-month window, up to five attempts are permitted. The total lifetime ceiling is eight attempts. A candidate who cancels a score immediately after viewing it can retake without serving a waiting period if they cancel within the 72-hour window—but a cancelled score remains visible to admissions committees unless a candidate submits a separate appeal to GMAC for removal.
