Three Core Reading Techniques

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Skimming means reading quickly to grasp the overall message — your eyes catch the first and last sentences of each paragraph, plus headings. Scanning is the opposite: you hunt for a specific detail (a date, a name, a definition) by moving your gaze straight to it. Close Reading demands slowing down to interrogate every word, noting tone, word choice, and the author’s angle. The pangunahing kaisipan is the single central idea the entire passage communicates; the pantulong na kaisipan are the supporting details that flesh it out. When analyzing sentences, identify the pokus (focus), aspekto (aspect), and perspektibo (perspective) of the verb. Two traps that cost UPCAT points: answering from memory instead of the text, and confusing the main idea with a supporting detail. Always read the question stem before the passage to know which technique to deploy.

🟡 Standard — Regular Study (2d–2mo)

Three Core Reading Techniques

Skimming is a rapid surface pass. You read the pam pam pam title, subheadings, the opening sentence, and the closing paragraph of each section. In 30–60 seconds a skilled skimmer knows whether the passage is about the history of Filipino literature or the effects of volcanic ash on agriculture. This technique answers “What is this mostly about?” in under a minute.

Scanning activates when you know the question first. Need the year Jose Rizal was born? You scan for “1871” — your eyes do not read sequentially, they jump. Scanning relies on visual pattern recognition: numbers, capitalized names, words in bold or italics, and repeated terms. Practice this by timing yourself finding five named details in a 300-word passage.

Close Reading is deliberate, slow, and analytical. You parse the text word by word, noting the author’s tono (tone) — kritisismo, pag-asa, pagtatakang — and estilo (style). You use kontekstong pangungusap (sentence context) to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words rather than guessing. Close Reading answers questions about the author’s purpose, the implied meaning, and the rhetorical effect of specific word choices.

Identifying Main and Supporting Ideas

The pangunahing kaisipan answers: “What single idea does the author build everything else around?” It is never a detail, a date, or an example — it is the overarching claim. The pantulong na kaisipan answers: “What evidence or elaboration does the author use to reinforce the main idea?” Supporting ideas include statistics, anecdotes, definitions, and comparisons.

In a passage about climate change, the main idea might be: “Ang pagbabago ng klima ay nakakaapekto sa agrikultura ng Pilipinas.” A supporting detail might be: “Noong 2020, bumaba ng 15% ang produksyon ng bigas sa Ilocos region dahil sa matagal na tagtuyot.”

Common UPCAT Traps

  1. Confusing main and supporting ideas — if an answer option sounds plausible but is too specific, it is likely a supporting detail, not the main idea.
  2. Relying on prior knowledge — the text is the sole authority on the exam. A statement true in real life but not stated in the passage is incorrect.
  3. Skipping the question stem — reading the passage before the questions wastes time; reading questions first tells you which technique to use.

🔴 Extended — Deep Study (3mo+)

Clause Analysis (Pagsusuri ng mga Sugnay)

UPCAT Filipino questions frequently test your ability to analyze the grammatical structure of sentences within the passage. Each sugnay (clause) contains a pandiwa (verb) that carries information about pokus (who or what the action is performed on), aspekto (whether the action is completed, ongoing, or habitual), and perspektibo (the speaker’s point of view: realis or irrealis).

For example, in the clause “Ang mga mag-aaral ay nagsasagawa ng masusing pag-aaral,” the pandiwa nagsasagawa is in the kontemplatibong aspekto (contemplated/ongoing), the pokus is mga mag-aaral, and the perspektibo is realis (the action is presented as real). If the passage asks about the author’s tone, the verb aspect often clues you in: habitual actions suggest neutrality, completed actions suggest certainty, and contemplated actions suggest uncertainty or planning.

Tono at Estilo ng May-akda

The author’s tono (tone) shapes how you interpret claims. Common tones in UPCAT passages: mapagkunwari (sarcastic), malumanay (gentle), mapanghusga (critical), mapag-alsa (revolutionary). The estilo (style) includes the use of imagery, repetition, and code-switching between Filipino and English or Spanish — each stylistic choice carries meaning. A passage peppered with Spanish loanwords (tiempo, razon, komo) signals a colonial-era or traditional Filipino voice. Recognizing this helps you answer interpretation questions more accurately.

Worked Example

Passage excerpt: “Ang pagtatag ng bagong republika noong 1899 ay hindi nagtagal. Sa loob ng dalawang taon, nasakop ng Estados Unidos ang halos buong kapuluan. Ang mga manlalaban ay napilitang umurong sa kabundukan.”

Question: Ano ang pangunahing kaisipan ng talataan? A. Ang pagtatag ng bagong republika noong 1899 B. Ang mabilis na pagbagsak ng republika sa kamay ng Amerika C. Ang paglaban ng mga Pilipino sa kabundukan D. Ang kolonyal na patakaran ng Estados Unidos

Answer: B. Option A names an event but does not capture the passage’s central argument. Option C describes only the final detail. Option D names a theme but is too broad — the passage specifically argues that the republic fell quickly. B synthesizes the temporal marker (“sa loob ng dalawang taon”) with the action (“nasakop”) to state the central claim.

Practice Prompts

  1. Read a 400-word Filipino editorial. Skim in 45 seconds to state the main idea in one sentence. Then scan for three specific dates or names. Finally, close-read the final paragraph and identify the tono and perspektibo of the pandiwa used.
  2. Given five answer options for a main-idea question, classify each as pangunahing kaisipan, pantulong na kaisipan, or di-katangian (irrelevant). Time yourself — aim for under 90 seconds per question.
