Origins of the Dravidian Movement

🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)

Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your exam.

Topic 10 in TNPSC Group 1 History covers the History of Tamil Nadu — Dravidian politics, the Self-Respect Movement, social reform, and the Tamil cultural renaissance. The Justice Party was founded in 1916 as the South Indian Liberal Federation to represent non-Brahmin interests. E.V. Ramasamy (Periyar) launched the Self-Respect Movement in 1925, advocating rationalism, women’s rights, and rejection of caste hierarchy. The political lineage runs Justice Party → Dravidar Kazhagam (1944) → DMK (1949). Anti-Hindi agitations of 1937 and 1965 became defining milestones in Tamil political identity. Subramania Bharati and Bharathidasan drove the literary renaissance.

  • High-yield pointers: 1916 = Justice Party; 1925 = Self-Respect Movement; 1944 = Dravidar Kazhagam; 1949 = DMK.
  • Anti-Hindi agitation years: 1937 (Justice Party ministry) and 1965 (under Congress regime).
  • C.N. Annadurai founded the DMK and led it to power in 1967.

Origins of the Dravidian Movement

The Dravidian Movement emerged from non-Brahmin mobilisation against perceived Brahmin dominance in education, government service, and religion. The Justice Party, established in 1916 under T.M. Nair, P. Thyagaraya Chetty, and others, contested legislative council elections in 1920 and captured power in the Madras Presidency. Its ministries (1921–26 and 1930s) introduced the Community G.O. reserving jobs for backward classes — a landmark social justice measure.

Periyar and the Self-Respect Movement

E.V. Ramasamy Periyar founded the Self-Respect Movement in 1925 with Kanchipuram Nattu Desika Mudaliar and S. Ramanathan, fusing it with the Justice Party in 1938. The movement promoted rationalism, women’s education, widow remarriage, inter-caste marriage, and temple-entry rights. Periyar’s newspaper Kudi Arasu and later Viduthalai became ideological vehicles. In 1944, Periyar renamed the Justice Party as Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) to emphasise Dravidian identity over electoral politics.

Anti-Hindi Agitations

The 1937 agitation targeted the Madras Presidency’s plan to introduce Hindi in schools, leading to the first ministry’s fall. The 1965 agitation, against the Official Languages Act, saw student-led protests, self-immolations, and concessions from the Centre. Both episodes entrenched the DMK’s electoral narrative that Tamil cultural autonomy was non-negotiable.

Tamil Renaissance and Literature

Subramania Bharati (1882–1921), called Mahakavi, modernised Tamil prose and poetry through works like Panchali Sabadham and Kannan Pattu. Bharathidasan extended this rationalist, anti-caste literary tradition. V.O. Chidambaram Pillai and the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company symbolised Tamil commercial self-respect.

Evolution of Dravidian Political Organisations

The Justice Party functioned primarily as an elitist forum of non-Brahmin landed gentry and professionals, contrasting with the mass-based, agitational character Periyar introduced through the DK. The 1949 split occurred because Periyar declared the DK would dissolve upon his death, prompting C.N. Annadurai to float the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) as a parliamentary successor. In 1972, M.G. Ramachandran broke away to form the AIADMK, citing personal and policy differences — a schism that structures Tamil politics to this day. The DK persisted as a fringe rationalist platform, contesting but rarely winning.

Social Reform Beyond Caste

The reform impulse addressed temple entry (later codified by the Temple Entry Authorization and Indemnity Act, 1939), widow remarriage, abolition of devadasi practice, and women’s suffrage advocacy. Ayothidasa Pandithar championed anti-caste discourse through ParaiyarPuthiya Thalattu and Dravidian folklore, while Thanthai Periyar linked script reform and rationalist education. These reforms overlapped with the national social reform lineage of Periyar’s contemporary, Mahatma Gandhi, but diverged sharply on religion.

Architectural and Cultural Heritage

Tamil Nadu’s monumental record under the Pallavas (Mahendravarman, Narasimhavarman), Pandyas, and Cholas (Rajaraja I, Rajendra I) contributed the rock-cut Mahendravalli style, Dravidian gopuram architecture, and the Brihadisvara temple at Thanjavur. The Sangam corpus, Thirukkural, and Silappatikaram form the literary bedrock invoked in Dravidian political discourse.

Common Mistakes in the Exam Hall

  • Confusing DK (1944) with DMK (1949) as the same party.
  • Attributing the 1967 electoral victory to Periyar (who had distanced himself from electoral politics) rather than Annadurai.
  • Citing 1965 as the first Anti-Hindi agitation.
  • Treating the Dravidian Movement as post-1947, ignoring its pre-independence Justice Party roots.
  • Reducing Periyar to atheism alone, ignoring his self-respect framework encompassing gender, labour, and economic justice.

Trap tip: TNPSC mains often pairs a question on Periyar’s ideology with one on DMK governance — revise both, not just founding dates.

Practice Prompts

  1. Trace the ideological continuity from the Justice Party (1916) to the DMK’s 1967 electoral victory, identifying three structural shifts.
  2. Evaluate how the Anti-Hindi agitations of 1937 and 1965 shaped Tamil Nadu’s post-independence political culture.
