A region in geography is an area of the earth’s surface marked by internal homogeneity or by functional ties to a central node, distinguishing it from neighbouring areas. Two principal types dominate the regional concept: Formal (Uniform) regions defined by a uniform attribute such as rainfall, language, or crop (e.g., the rice belt of Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery delta), and Functional (Nodal) regions organised around a focal point with flows of goods, services, or commuters (e.g., the hinterland of Chennai). Areal Differentiation (Hartshorne) stresses the uniqueness of each region, while Regionalism refers to the sentiment or policy emphasis on region-based identity. Whittlesey’s classification of world agricultural regions is the standard reference; for India it yields rice, wheat, millet, cotton, plantation, and dry-farming belts.

Definition of a Region

A region is a segment of the earth’s surface distinguished from adjoining segments by a specified set of criteria — physical (relief, climate, vegetation) or cultural (language, economy, religion). The criteria may be single-factor (e.g., rainfall above 100 cm) or multi-factor (combining relief, soils, crops and density). Regions are mental constructs used for description, comparison and planning, not natural objects.

Classification of Regions

  • Formal / Uniform regions share one or more visible traits uniformly across space. Examples: the Chhotanagpur Plateau (mineral-rich), the Sahel (semi-arid grassland), the Konkan coast (laterite soil, high rainfall, coconut–rice economy).
  • Functional / Nodal regions are tied to a node by interaction — transport, trade, communication or administration. The Chennai metropolitan region, Delhi NCR, and a district with its taluks are nodal because services, labour and capital flow inward.
  • Hierarchical ordering allows micro (a village watershed), meso (a delta) and macro (the Ganga plain) regions to nest within one another.

Areal Differentiation vs. Regionalism

Hartshorne’s Areal Differentiation argues that geography’s task is to describe why each place is unique by integrating physical and cultural variables. Schaefer’s counter-view sought general spatial laws (quantitative revolution). Regionalism is the political or emotional assertion of regional identity — distinct from the academic regional concept, though it draws on it.

Agricultural Regions of India (Whittlesey framework)

Whittlesey identified five world agricultural types. Applied to India they map as:

  1. Rice region — Cauvery, Krishna, Godavari deltas, Kuttanad, lower Ganga.
  2. Wheat region — Punjab, Haryana, western UP.
  3. Millet / dry-farming region — Rajasthan, Deccan plateau.
  4. Cotton region — Vidarbha, parts of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.
  5. Plantation region — Nilgiris, Wayanad, Darjeeling hills.

Edge Cases and Conceptual Traps

A country is not automatically a region; India is a political unit, but the Indo-Gangetic Plain is a formal region while Mumbai Metropolitan Region is a nodal region. Students often confuse physical regions (natural) with cultural regions (language/religion) — the overlap is partial, e.g., Tamil-speaking areas do not coincide exactly with the Cauvery delta. Agricultural regions shift over time: the Green Revolution converted parts of the wheat region into a rice–wheat belt, and drip irrigation is redrawing the dry-farming boundary in Coimbatore and Madurai.

Connection to Planning

The regional concept underpins Indian Five-Year Plans — river-valley planning (Damodar Valley Corporation), National Capital Region (NCR) planning, and Tamil Nadu’s district planning committees. Multilevel planning uses nodal hierarchies: village → block → district → state. The Pioneer Regional Geography of India (Stamp, 1930s) and the Oxford Economic Atlas of India are foundational references.

Common Mistakes

  • Treating “region” and “state” as synonyms.
  • Listing formal regions without naming the uniform attribute.
  • Describing Whittlesey without naming his five criteria: livestock and crop association, crop and livestock intensity, commercialisation, mechanisation, and farming type.
  • Ignoring the scale hierarchy — the same area can be a macro-region nationally and a micro-region globally.

Worked Mini-Example

The Cauvery delta qualifies as a formal (uniform) region because three attributes converge: alluvial soil, canal-irrigated rice cultivation, and Tamil-speaking agrarian population. Simultaneously it is part of the Chennai nodal region for banking, higher education and port trade — showing that a single area can belong to both regional types when different criteria are applied.

  2. Reclassify Tamil Nadu into any two formal and two nodal regions, justifying each with at least two attributes.
