🟢 Lite — Quick Review (1h–1d)
Rapid summary for last-minute revision before your exam.
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia occupies roughly four-fifths of the Arabian Peninsula, covering about 2,150,000 sq km in the southwest of Asia. The country is an absolute monarchy ruled by the House of Al Saud; the King holds the title Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques. The official capital is Riyadh, and the official language is Arabic.
Administration is divided into 13 regions (manatiq), each subdivided into governorates. Two cities — Mecca (Makkah al-Mukarramah) and Medina (al-Madinah al-Munawwarah) — host the Two Holy Mosques and serve as the destinations for Hajj and Umrah.
National Day falls on 23 September, commemorating the 1932 unification. The flag carries a green background with the white shahada and a sword. Vision 2030, launched in 2016, is the diversification roadmap. Saudi Arabia holds the world’s second-largest proven oil reserves (after Venezuela); the currency is the Saudi Riyal (SAR), pegged near 3.75 SAR = 1 USD.

Geography and Location
Saudi Arabia sits at the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe, with coastlines on the Red Sea (west) and the Arabian Gulf (east). The Rub’ al-Khali (“Empty Quarter”) in the south is one of the largest continuous sand deserts in the world. Terrain is largely arid plateau, with mountain ranges such as the Sarawat running parallel to the Red Sea coast.
Administrative Structure
The Kingdom comprises 13 administrative regions: Riyadh, Makkah, al-Madinah, al-Qassim, the Eastern Province, Asir, Tabuk, Hail, al-Jawf, Jizan, Najran, al-Bahah, and the Northern Borders. Each region contains governorates (muhafazat) headed by an emir appointed by royal decree.
Government and Symbols
- System: Absolute monarchy, governed by Basic Law of Governance (1992).
- Head of State: The King, currently Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
- Legislative body: The Shura Council (Majlis al-Shura), an appointed consultative assembly.
- Flag: Green field, white shahada (“There is no god but God; Muhammad is the Messenger of God”), and a white sword.
- Anthem: Nashid al-Istiqlal (Anthem of Independence).
Economy
Saudi Arabia is the world’s largest exporter of crude oil. Ghawar Field is the largest onshore oil field, and Safaniya is the largest offshore field. The Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco) is the national petroleum company. Vision 2030 under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman targets diversification into tourism, mining, logistics, entertainment, and renewable energy. Landmark projects include NEOM, the Red Sea Global tourism initiative, and Qiddiya.
Demographics
The population exceeds 33 million, of whom roughly 38–40% are non-Saudi residents. The Nitaqat (Saudization) program sets quotas for employing Saudi nationals in the private sector.
Heritage
UNESCO World Heritage Sites include Al-Hijr (Madâin Sâlih) in Medina Region, At-Turaif District in ad-Dir’iyah, Historic Jeddah (Al-Balad), Rock Art in the Hail region, and the Al-Ahsa Oasis.
Typical Exam Patterns
Qimiyah GK items test: matching cities to regions, identifying the correct Hijri-Gregorian founding date, distinguishing Vision 2030 megaprojects, and recognising flag/anthem symbols. Numerical traps (e.g. “12 regions” or “largest oil reserves”) are common.

Comprehensive coverage for students on a longer study timeline.
Edge Cases and Examination Traps
A frequent trap asks for “the largest proven reserves” — the correct answer is Venezuela (~304 billion barrels), with Saudi Arabia ranked second (~267 billion barrels). Do not confuse production volume (Saudi Arabia leads OPEC in output capacity) with reserves. Similarly, the Kingdom has the world’s largest desalination capacity, desalinating more water than any other nation, a fact occasionally tested.
Founding and Calendar Conversion
The Kingdom was proclaimed on 21 Jumada al-Awwal 1351 H, which corresponds to 23 September 1932 by the Gregorian calendar. National Day celebrations use the Gregorian date; Hijri-date questions require conversion using the Umm al-Qura calendar.
Demographic and Social Indicators
- Median age is around 29 years, indicating a youthful population.
- Saudization bands in Nitaqat are colour-coded: Platinum, Green (High/Mid/Low), Yellow, Red.
- Female workforce participation has risen sharply under Vision 2030 reforms.
Vision 2030 Megaprojects
- NEOM: a $500-billion planned megacity in Tabuk Province, including The Line.
- Red Sea Global and AMAALA: luxury tourism destinations on the Red Sea coast.
- Qiddiya: entertainment and cultural city near Riyadh.
- Diriyah: heritage and cultural tourism project at the At-Turaif site.
Common Mistakes
- Writing 12 or 14 regions instead of 13.
- Confusing Mecca with Medina when asked which city hosts the Prophet’s Mosque (Masjid an-Nabawi — Medina).
- Saying Saudi Arabia has the largest reserves (it is second).
- Quoting the Hijri founding date as the National Day.
Practice Prompts
- Multiple choice: “Which of the following is the official capital of Saudi Arabia?” — Answer: Riyadh.
- Numeric: “How many administrative regions does Saudi Arabia have?” — Answer: 13.
- Assertion–Reason: “Saudi Arabia has the largest proven oil reserves in the world — therefore it is the largest oil exporter.” Assess: the reason and conclusion are linked, but the premise is false (Venezuela holds the largest reserves), so the assertion fails.
