Critical Reasoning questions test your ability to evaluate arguments — identifying assumptions, conclusions, strengths, weaknesses, and logical structure. In the MAT VARC section, Critical Reasoning passages are short (typically 100–150 words) and are followed by four or five questions that probe your logical analysis skills. These questions appear alongside RC passages and share the same 150-minute time constraint.
Every argument has three components: premises (the evidence or information provided), a conclusion (the claim the author is trying to establish), and assumptions (unstated beliefs that connect the premises to the conclusion). Your task is to identify and evaluate each of these elements.
The most common mistake candidates make in Critical Reasoning is letting personal opinions affect their answers. You are not evaluating whether you agree with the argument — you are evaluating whether the argument is logically sound. An argument with which you personally disagree may be well-reasoned; an argument with which you personally agree may contain serious logical flaws.
MAT Critical Reasoning questions typically appear in these forms:
- “What is the main conclusion of the argument?”
- “Which of the following is an assumption required by the argument?”
- “Which of the following, if true, would strengthen the argument?”
- “Which of the following, if true, would weaken the argument?”
- “What must be true if the argument’s conclusion is to follow?”
Key facts to remember:
- Separate the argument’s evidence from its conclusion before attempting any question
- An assumption is something that must be true for the conclusion to follow, but is not explicitly stated
- Strengthening and weakening options address the logical connection — not whether you agree with the conclusion
- Stay objective — your personal beliefs are irrelevant to logical evaluation
⚡ Exam Tip: On strengthen/weaken questions, the most common error is choosing options that agree or disagree with the conclusion rather than options that affect the logical link between evidence and conclusion. The question asks whether the argument works — not whether the conclusion is desirable.

Anatomy of an Argument
Understanding argument structure is the foundation of all Critical Reasoning questions. Every argument consists of:
Premises: The evidence, facts, data, or statements provided to support the conclusion. Premises are the foundation — they are what the author offers as justification.
Conclusion: The main point the author is trying to establish. This is what the argument is designed to prove. The conclusion is not always stated explicitly — sometimes you must infer it.
Assumptions: Unstated beliefs that connect the premises to the conclusion. Assumptions are the logical bridge — they are what must be true for the premises to actually support the conclusion.
Example:
- Premise: “A study of 500 graduates from the IIM executive programme found that 78% received salary increases within 18 months of completion.”
- Assumption: “The salary increases were caused by the programme rather than other factors.” (This is not stated — but it must be true for the data to support any conclusion about the programme’s value.)
- Conclusion: “The IIM executive programme is effective at improving graduates’ career outcomes.”
The premise is factual. The conclusion goes beyond the premise — it asserts causation and effectiveness. The assumption bridges the gap.
Identifying Conclusions and Premises
Conclusion indicators: therefore, thus, hence, so, consequently, must be, should, shows that, indicates that, it follows that, we can conclude, the point is
Premise indicators: because, since, given that, as shown by, the reason is, for the reason that, based on, evidence shows
When reading a Critical Reasoning passage, look for these indicator words to separate what is evidence from what is being argued.
Question Types in Detail
Type 1 — Main Conclusion Questions: Identify what the argument is trying to prove.
Example passage: “Remote work has increased dramatically in India since 2020. Surveys indicate that 65% of IT professionals prefer working from home at least three days a week. Therefore, companies should adopt permanent hybrid work policies.”
Conclusion: “Companies should adopt permanent hybrid work policies.” The preceding sentences are evidence — they establish context but are not what the author is trying to prove.
Type 2 — Assumption Questions: Identify an unstated premise that must be true for the argument to work.
Example passage: “All graduates of Top Ten MBA programmes receive starting salaries above ₹20 lakhs per annum. Priya graduated from a Top Ten MBA programme. Therefore, Priya will receive a starting salary above ₹20 lakhs.”
Assumption: “Priya did not receive an exception to the normal salary range.” The argument assumes the general pattern applies to Priya specifically without exception.
Type 3 — Strengthen Questions: Which option, if true, makes the argument more logically compelling?
Look for options that:
- Fill a gap in the reasoning (address the assumption)
- Provide additional supporting evidence
- Rule out an alternative explanation
- Strengthen the connection between evidence and conclusion
Example: To strengthen the MBA salary argument above, you would look for an option that confirms the pattern applies to Priya or rules out alternative explanations for high starting salaries.
Type 4 — Weaken Questions: Which option, if true, undermines the argument?
Look for options that:
- Introduce a counterexample
- Show the evidence is insufficient
- Demonstrate an alternative cause
- Break the logical connection between evidence and conclusion
Example: To weaken the MBA salary argument, you would look for an option showing that Priya’s specific circumstances differ, or that the 78% statistic doesn’t apply to her case.
Type 5 — Inference/Conclusion Questions: What must be true based on the passage?
This differs from main conclusion — the inference follows necessarily from the evidence, not just supported by it.
Common Logical Fallacies to Recognise
MAT frequently tests your ability to spot flawed reasoning:
Hasty Generalisation: Drawing broad conclusions from insufficient evidence. Example: “My neighbour drives a BMW and is rude. Therefore, BMW drivers are rude.” Generalising from one instance to an entire group.
Post Hoc (False Cause): Assuming that because A happened before B, A caused B. Example: “The festival was on Thursday and the market crashed on Friday. Therefore, the festival caused the market crash.” Temporal sequence doesn’t establish causation.
False Dilemma (Either-Or): Presenting only two options when more exist. Example: “You’re either with us or against us.” There may be a middle position.
Ad Populum (Appeal to Popularity): Arguing something is true because many people believe it. Example: “Most people believe the new policy is harmful, so it is harmful.” Popular belief doesn’t establish truth.
Ad Ignorantiam (Appeal to Ignorance): Arguing something is true because it hasn’t been proven false. Example: “No one has proven ghosts don’t exist, so ghosts are real.” Absence of evidence isn’t evidence of presence.
Circular Reasoning (Begging the Question): The conclusion is assumed in the premise. Example: “The book is great because it’s written by a great author.” No independent evidence supports the conclusion.
Slippery Slope: Assuming one event will inevitably lead to extreme consequences. Example: “If we allow casual Fridays, soon no one will wear professional attire at all.” One step doesn’t inevitably cause the extreme outcome.

Conditional Reasoning
Many arguments involve “if-then” relationships. Understanding these is essential for Critical Reasoning.
“If A, then B” can be expressed as: A → B
Four valid logical forms:
- Modus Ponens: If A → B, and A is true, then B must be true
- Modus Tollens: If A → B, and B is false, then A must be false
- Inverse Error: If A → B, and B is true, you cannot conclude A is true (B could be true for other reasons)
- Converse Error: If A → B, and A is false, you cannot conclude B is false
Example:
- If it rains, the match will be cancelled.
- The match was cancelled.
- Can you conclude it rained? NO — this commits inverse error. The match could have been cancelled for other reasons (poor pitch, security concerns, player strike).
Correct conclusion from modus tollens:
- If it rains, the match will be cancelled.
- The match was NOT cancelled.
- Can you conclude it didn’t rain? NO — also inverse error. The match might not have been cancelled despite rain (indoor stadium, etc.).
The only valid conclusions come from modus ponens (affirming the antecedent) or modus tollens (denying the consequent).
Quantifier Logic
Words like “all,” “some,” “none,” and “no” change logical structure:
Universal statements: “All A are B”
- If something is A, then it is B (without exception)
- The converse “All B are A” is NOT necessarily true
Existential statements: “Some A are B”
- At least one A is also B
- “Some A are B” does NOT mean “Some A are not B”
- “Some” means at least one, could be all, could be a few
Negative statements: “No A are B”
- If something is A, it is not B (without exception)
Common errors:
- “Some A are B” does NOT mean “Some A are not B”
- “All A are B” does NOT mean “All B are A”
Example:
- All roses are flowers. Does this mean all flowers are roses? NO.
- But “Some flowers are roses” is definitely true (since all roses are flowers).
Structure Matching
Some MAT Critical Reasoning questions ask you to identify an argument with the same logical structure as the one described.
Example: “Since the new traffic law reduced accidents in City A, it will also reduce accidents in City B.”
Structure: X caused a result in context A; therefore X will cause the same result in context B.
Which option has the same structure? (A) “The diet worked for my friend, so it will work for me.” ✓ — Same: intervention in one case predicts same outcome in another (B) “This medicine cures headaches, so it will cure fever.” ✗ — Different: different conditions don’t support same prediction
Evaluating Evidence Quality
Not all evidence is equally strong:
Stronger evidence:
- Large, representative samples (not just a few anecdotes)
- Controlled experiments (not just observational data)
- Verified statistical data from credible sources
- Expert consensus based on established research
- Direct causal observations with plausible mechanisms
Weaker evidence:
- Anecdotes or single examples
- Small or biased samples
- Correlation mistaken for causation
- Unverified claims or testimonials
- Generalisations from one instance
When evaluating arguments, ask: Does the evidence actually support the conclusion with the strength the author claims?
Advanced Strengthen/Weaken Strategies
On strengthen/weaken questions, you must identify the argument’s assumption — the unstated premise connecting evidence to conclusion — and evaluate whether the option addresses that assumption.
Strengthen: Does the option support the assumption or provide additional evidence that strengthens the conclusion?
Weaken: Does the option undermine the assumption or show that the evidence doesn’t actually support the conclusion?
The option that addresses the logical gap (the assumption) is correct — not the option that simply agrees or disagrees with the conclusion.
Example argument: “Companies that offer flexible working hours have lower employee turnover. Therefore, adopting flexible working hours will reduce turnover at Company X.”
Assumption: Company X is similar to other companies in ways relevant to flexible working hours’ effectiveness.
Strengthen option: “Company X’s employee satisfaction surveys show that flexible working is the most requested benefit.” (Addresses assumption — employees want it, so it’s likely to work)
Weaken option: “Company X’s turnover is primarily driven by salary levels, not working hours.” (Undermines assumption — the intervention targets the wrong cause)
Practice with MAT-Style Questions
Passage: “A study of 500 office workers found that those who took regular breaks every 90 minutes reported 30% higher job satisfaction than those who did not. HR consultants recommend that all companies implement structured break schedules.”
Q1: The argument’s main conclusion is: (A) Structured break schedules improve job satisfaction (B) Regular breaks cause higher job satisfaction (C) HR consultants recommend break schedules (D) 500 workers were surveyed
Answer: (A) — The passage builds to this recommendation as the intended conclusion. (B) is what the study appears to show, but the argument’s point is the recommendation. (C) is a premise. (D) is factual detail.
Q2: One assumption required for the conclusion is: (A) The workers studied were representative of all office workers (B) Job satisfaction cannot be measured objectively (C) Break schedules are cost-effective to implement (D) HR consultants are always correct
Answer: (A) — Without this assumption, we cannot generalise from 500 workers to “all companies.” (B) is irrelevant. (C) is not required for the logical connection. (D) is too strong and not required.
Q3: Which of the following would weaken the argument? (A) The workers who took breaks also had better managers (B) Break schedules are already common in many offices (C) Job satisfaction increased only marginally in the study (D) The study was conducted by a break schedule company
Answer: (A) — Introduces an alternative explanation for the higher job satisfaction (better managers), breaking the causal link between breaks and satisfaction. (D) raises bias concern which also weakens, but (A) more directly attacks the causal assumption.
Critical Reasoning Checklist
- Identify the conclusion first — what is the author trying to prove?
- Identify the premises — what evidence is offered?
- Find the assumption — what must be true for the conclusion to follow?
- For strengthen/weaken: Does the option address the logical gap (assumption) or just add irrelevant information?
- Watch for: causal language (causes, leads to, results in) — correlation does not equal causation
- Stay objective — don’t let personal views influence your evaluation
- Note: An argument can be weak (has logical flaws) but still have a valid conclusion if the evidence genuinely supports it
