BPSC PYQ: “Analyze the flood problem in Bihar and suggest management measures” Answer: Bihar faces annual flooding due to its location in the Indo-Gangetic floodplain. Major causes: heavy monsoon rainfall in Nepal catchments, shallow river beds, inadequate drainage, and siltation causing river beds to rise above surrounding fields. The Kosi River is particularly problematic with its shifting course. Management measures include: embankments, improvement of drainage channels, river training works, disaster warning systems, and relocation of vulnerable settlements.

Wheat Cultivation:

  • Most important rabi crop
  • HYV adoption high in southern districts
  • Problem: Terminal heat stress reduces yields

BPSC Strategy: Bihar-specific questions are common in BPSC. Focus on flood management, agricultural patterns, migration issues, and development challenges. The state’s unique position between Nepal and Jharkhand and its dependence on river systems are particularly important.

Common BPSC Questions:

  1. “Discuss the flood problems in Bihar and their management” (15 marks)
  2. “Analyze the agricultural profile of Bihar and its challenges” (12 marks)
  3. “Describe the demographic and migration patterns of Bihar” (10 marks)
  4. “Examine the industrial development of Bihar and its constraints” (10 marks)

Map Work for Bihar: Draw and label: Districts, major rivers (Ganga, Kosi, Gandak, Ghaghara), physiographic zones, National Highways, industrial areas, flood-prone zones, important towns (Patna, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, Bhagalpur, Purnea).
