XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national-level management entrance examination conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of Xavier Association of India. It is one of India's oldest and most prestigious MBA entrance exams, used by over 100 B-schools for admission. XAT is known for its unpredictable and challenging format, particularly in Decision Making, Verbal Ability, and Quantitative Aptitude sections. Unlike other exams, XAT includes a dedicated Decision Making section with case lets and scenario-based questions testing ethical reasoning and business judgment. Data Interpretation and Quantitative Ability questions in XAT are generally considered more difficult than CAT. 📋 Exam Pattern

XAT exam pattern has evolved over years. Currently it consists of multiple sections: Verbal and Logical Reasoning (VA+LR), Decision Making (DM), Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation (QA+DI), General Knowledge (GK), and an Essay Writing section. The total number of questions varies (around 75-100) with a duration of about 180 minutes. Each question carries 1 mark with negative marking of 0.25 for wrong answers (0.10 for GK). Recent patterns have introduced multi-select questions where more than one option may be correct. Essay writing (typically 15-20 minutes) is part of some B-school selections post-XAT score receipt.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline with minimum 50% marks from a recognized university for general category. Final year students can apply provisionally. There is no age limit. Work experience is considered by some institutes for specific programs but is not mandatory for XAT eligibility. Candidates from all academic backgrounds including Commerce, Arts, Science, and Engineering appear for XAT.

What is XAT and which B-schools accept it?

XAT (Xavier Aptitude Test) is a national-level MBA entrance exam conducted by XLRI Jamshedpur on behalf of the Xavier Association of Management Institutes (XAMI). It is accepted by over 150 B-schools across India, including XLRI Jamshedpur (its primary caller), XIMB (Bhubaneswar), Great Lakes Institute of Management (Chennai), IMT Dubai, and many other premier private B-schools. XAT is known for its emphasis on decision-making skills and is preferred by candidates targeting XLRI's HR and Business programmes.

What is the XAT exam pattern?

XAT consists of three main sections: Verbal & Logical Ability (26 questions), Decision Making (22 questions), and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation (28 questions) — 76 questions total in 165 minutes. Additionally, there is a General Knowledge section (25 questions) and an Essay Writing section — both separately timed and not counted for percentile calculation but reviewed during interviews. There is a negative marking of 0.25 marks per wrong answer for the first three sections. The exam is conducted online (CBT) once a year, typically in early January.

What is a good XAT score?

A score above 95 percentile (approximately 35+ out of 76) is considered competitive for shortlisting by XLRI Jamshedpur. For XLRI HRM, a score above 99 percentile is typically needed. For other top XAT-accepting schools like XIMB, Great Lakes, and IMT, 85–90 percentile is generally sufficient for shortlisting. The Decision Making section is unique to XAT and carries significant weight — strong performance here can compensate for weaker Quant or Verbal scores. After shortlisting, WAT and PI rounds determine final selection.
