What is WBJEE and who is it for?
WBJEE (West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination) is a state-level engineering entrance exam conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB) for admission to undergraduate engineering, pharmacy, and architecture programmes in colleges across West Bengal. It is open to students who have completed their Class 12 from any recognised board (WBCHSE, CBSE, ICSE) — West Bengal domicile is preferred for government college seats but not mandatory. WBJEE is the primary entrance exam for institutions like Jadavpur University, IIEST Shibpur, and all government and private engineering colleges in West Bengal.
What is the WBJEE exam pattern?
WBJEE consists of three papers: Paper 1 (Mathematics, 75 questions, 2 hours), Paper 2 (Physics & Chemistry combined, 100 questions, 2 hours). All questions are multiple-choice with four options. There are three categories of questions: Category 1 (single correct answer, 1 mark each), Category 2 (single correct answer, 2 marks each), and Category 3 (multiple correct answers, 2 marks each — must identify all correct options). There is no negative marking in WBJEE. The exam is conducted offline (pen-and-paper) in designated centres across West Bengal and other states.
How does WBJEE admission work?
WBJEE scores are used for the centralised counselling process (WEBCOUNS) in West Bengal. The merit rank is based on the normalised WBJEE score. Jadavpur University (the most prestigious) typically requires a rank under 1,000 for popular branches like Computer Science, Electronics, and Electrical Engineering. For government colleges like IIEST Shibpur, KGEC, and JIS College of Engineering, a rank within 5,000 is generally competitive. Private aided and self-financing colleges accept ranks up to 30,000 or more. The counselling process includes multiple rounds with fresh rank lists after each round.
