India · 5 subjects · 51 topics · Updated 2026-04-06

UPTET (Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) is a mandatory eligibility examination conducted by the Uttar Pradesh Basic Education Board (UPBEB) for teaching positions in government and aided schools across Uttar Pradesh. The exam is divided into two papers: Paper I is for candidates aspiring to teach Classes I-V (Primary), and Paper II is for Classes VI-VIII (Upper Primary). Each paper covers four sections: Child Development and Pedagogy, Language I (Hindi), Language II (English/Sanskrit/Urdu), and either Mathematics & Environmental Studies (Paper I) or Science & Social Studies (Paper II). UPTET certificate is valid for lifetime and is essential for teaching jobs in UP government schools. The exam tests not just subject knowledge but also pedagogical understanding — how children learn, teaching methodologies, and assessment approaches. With large numbers of aspirants every year, a focused preparation strategy covering all four sections equally is critical for clearing the cut-off.

Frequently Asked Questions — UPTET

Everything you need to know about UPTET. Scroll down for the complete study guide.

What is UPTET and how does it differ from CTET?
UPTET (Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test) is conducted by the UP Basic Education Board (UPBEB) for candidates aspiring to teach in Uttar Pradesh government schools — from Class 1 to Class 8. While CTET is a national-level certification accepted across India, UPTET is specifically for Uttar Pradesh state government teaching posts. However, qualifying UPTET also makes a candidate eligible for teaching jobs in some other state boards that recognise it. UPTET is conducted in both Hindi and English — the question paper is available in both languages. Passing UPTET is mandatory for applying to teacher vacancies in UP government schools.
What is the UPTET exam pattern?
UPTET has two papers: Paper 1 (for teachers of Class 1–5) and Paper 2 (for teachers of Class 6–8). Paper 1 covers Child Development & Pedagogy (30 questions), Language I — Hindi (30 questions), Language II — English/Urdu/Sanskrit (30 questions), Mathematics (30 questions), and Environmental Studies (30 questions) — 150 questions in 150 minutes. Paper 2 covers Child Development & Pedagogy (30 questions), Language I — Hindi (30 questions), Language II — English/Urdu/Sanskrit (30 questions), Mathematics & Science (60 questions) OR Social Studies (60 questions) — 150 questions in 150 minutes. There is no negative marking. Each correct answer carries 1 mark.
What is the UPTET qualifying criteria and validity?
To qualify UPTET, candidates need 60% aggregate marks (90 out of 150) for the General category — 55% for OBC, 50% for SC/ST. The UPTET certificate is valid for 5 years (unlike CTET's 7 years). After qualifying, candidates can apply for teacher vacancies in UP government schools under the UP Basic Shiksha service. Some private schools in UP also require UPTET as a minimum qualification. UPTET is distinct from UP TET — some coaching centres incorrectly use these terms interchangeably.
