RPSC RAS (Rajasthan Administrative Service) is a prestigious state-level competitive exam conducted by the Rajasthan Public Service Commission for recruitment to various administrative posts in the Rajasthan government. 📋 Exam Pattern

The RAS exam is conducted in three stages. Prelims is a single paper of 200 MCQs (General Knowledge and General Aptitude) for 200 marks with 1/3 negative marking, duration 3 hours. Candidates who clear Prelims appear for Mains, which comprises four conventional type papers: GS-I (Indian History, World History, Geography of India and Rajasthan), GS-II (Indian Polity, Governance, International Relations), GS-III (Economics, Science and Technology, Environment), and GS-IV (Logical Reasoning, Decision Making, Interpersonal Skills). Each Mains paper is of 200 marks. The final stage is a Personality Test of 100 marks. The final merit list is prepared from Mains marks after adding interview marks. The exam is conducted in Hindi and English (except language papers).

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must be Indian citizens and hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognized university. The age limit is 21-40 years for general category, with relaxation for SC/ST/OBC and other reserved categories. Physical standards may be specified for certain posts. Final year students awaiting results can also apply provisionally. Domicile of Rajasthan is not mandatory, though it may be considered in final selection for state-level posts.

What is RAS and how does it work?
RAS (Rajasthan Administrative Service) is the premier civil service of Rajasthan — recruited through the RPSC (Rajasthan Public Service Commission) Combined Services Examination. It is one of the most prestigious state-level competitive exams in India, attracting over 1 million applicants each cycle. RAS officers serve as District Collectors, Additional District Magistrates, Sub-Divisional Magistrates, and in various state-level departments. The examination covers three stages: Preliminary (screening), Main (written), and Interview. After selection, RAS officers undergo training at the Rajasthan Institute of State before being allocated to districts and departments.
What is the RAS exam pattern?
RAS Preliminary consists of one General Knowledge paper (200 questions, 3 hours) covering history, geography, politics, economy, science, technology, and current affairs of Rajasthan, India, and the world. The Mains has four papers: Paper 1 — General Knowledge & General Science (200 marks), Paper 2 — General Studies of Rajasthan (200 marks, focus on history, art, culture, geography, polity of Rajasthan), Paper 3 — General Studies of India and World (200 marks), and Paper 4 — General Hindi, Elementary Hindi Grammar, and English (200 marks). All papers are descriptive/short-answer except the Preliminary which is objective.
How tough is RAS and what should I target?
RAS Preliminary has a typical cutoff of 40–45% for the General category, but the actual marks needed vary by year. The real competition is in the Mains — out of ~15,000 who clear Prelims, only ~2,000 reach the Interview stage. For selection, a Mains score above 400 out of 800 is competitive for the merit list. Since all four Mains papers are descriptive, answer writing practice is essential — the Rajasthan-specific Paper 2 often differentiates top rankers.
