What is the MHT-CET exam pattern?

MHT-CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) consists of 200 multiple-choice questions: Physics (50 questions), Chemistry (50 questions), and Mathematics (100 questions). Each question carries 2 marks. There is no negative marking. The exam is conducted online (CBT) over approximately 3 hours. For PCB candidates, Biology replaces the Mathematics section with 100 questions. The exam is tougher than HSC board exams — approximately 20% of questions are from Class 11 curriculum.

What is the eligibility for MHT-CET?

Candidates must have passed Class 12 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics/Biology as compulsory subjects. There is no minimum aggregate requirement for appearing in MHT-CET. However, for admission to engineering colleges, candidates typically need 45% or above in PCM/PCB. Maharashtra state domicile is not mandatory for appearing — non-Maharashtra candidates can appear but are eligible only for institutional quota seats or minority institutions.

How does MHT-CET compare to JEE Main?

MHT-CET is specifically for admission to Maharashtra engineering colleges and tests only the Maharashtra Board syllabus, with questions often based directly on HSC textbook problems. JEE Main is a national-level exam covering CBSE/NCERT syllabus and tests conceptual understanding more deeply. A strong JEE Main preparation covers about 60-70% of MHT-CET, but MHT-CET requires additional focus on Maharashtra Board textbooks and HSC-specific problem-solving. The percentile cutoffs for top colleges (COEP, VJTI, ICT) are typically above 99.5 percentile in MHT-CET.
