KUCCPS Placement (Kenya) 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

KUCCPS (Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service) is the government body responsible for placing students into Kenyan universities and TVET institutions after the KCSE (Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education) exam. Unlike countries where you take a separate entrance exam, Kenyan university admission is based primarily on your KCSE grade — students apply to KUCCPS after receiving their KCSE results, and KUCCPS places them based on their grades, chosen programmes, and available capacity. KUCCPS handles placement for all public universities in Kenya including the University of Nairobi, Kenyatta University, Egerton University, and others.

KUCCPS calculates placement using the Mean Points Score (MPS) from KCSE results. The KCSE is graded on a scale of 12 points (A to D-). The aggregate cluster points are calculated based on the required subjects for your chosen programme — for example, Engineering programmes require the STEM cluster (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and either Geography or Computer Studies). Each programme at each university has a cutoff cluster points requirement. Students with a mean points score above the cutoff for their programme are eligible for placement. The higher your KCSE grade, the more placement options available.

If you don't get placed by KUCCPS to your preferred university or programme, you have several options: (1) Join a TVET (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) institution — KUCCPS also places students into TVET courses, which can lead to diploma or certificate programmes; (2) Apply directly to private universities — private universities like United States International University Africa (USIU-Africa), Strathmore University, and others have their own application processes and do not use KUCCPS; (3) Wait for the second round of placement when additional slots may open; (4) Consider improving your KCSE score by retaking the exam the following year. Remember that KUCCPS placement is free — avoid intermediaries who charge for placement services.
