What is KEAM and who is it for?
KEAM (Kerala Engineering, Agriculture and Medical Entrance Examination) is conducted by the Commissioner of Entrance Examination (CEE), Kerala for admission to B.Tech/B.E. programmes in government and private colleges across Kerala. It is specifically for students who have completed their Class 12 H.S.C. (or equivalent) from a recognised board — there is a mandatory Kerala domicile requirement or NRI category for non-domiciled students. KEAM tests Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics at the Class 11 and 12 level for engineering admissions.
What is the KEAM exam pattern?
KEAM consists of two papers: Paper 1 (Physics & Chemistry, 120 questions, 150 minutes) and Paper 2 (Mathematics, 120 questions, 150 minutes). All questions are objective MCQs. Each correct answer carries 4 marks in Physics and Chemistry, and 4 marks per correct answer in Mathematics. There is a negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer. The exam is conducted online (CBT) at designated centres. KEAM is separate from JEE Main — students can appear for both exams and use either score for Kerala engineering admissions.
How does KEAM admission work?
KEAM scores are used for the centralised admission process (CAP) in Kerala. The rank list is prepared based on the KEAM score (50% weight) plus marks in Physics and Chemistry in the Class 12 Board exam (50% weight). The combined score determines the merit rank for seat allocation across government, aided, and private self-financing colleges in Kerala. Top colleges like College of Engineering Trivandrum (CET), Government Engineering College Thrissur, and Model Engineering College typically require a rank within 2,000 for general category. NRI candidates have a separate quota with different cutoffs.
