India · 4 subjects · 48 topics · Updated 2026-04-06

The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) entrance examination was a premier medical entrance test for admission to the MBBS programme at JIPMER Puducherry and JIPMER Karaikal. JIPMER was one of the top medical institutions in India, consistently ranked among the top medical colleges in the country. From 2020 onwards, JIPMER MBBS was merged with NEET UG, making NEET the single entrance test for all medical colleges in India including JIPMER. However, JIPMER continues to conduct separate entrance tests for its postgraduate (MD/MS) programmes.

What is JIPMER and how does it work?
JIPMER (Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research) is an autonomous medical institution in Puducherry, consistently ranked among the top 3 medical colleges in India alongside AIIMS Delhi and VMMC. JIPMER offers MBBS, MD, MS, and super-speciality programmes. For MBBS, JIPMER used to conduct its own entrance exam (JIPMER MBBS) before the NMC made NEET mandatory for all medical colleges in 2020. Today, JIPMER MBBS admission is through NEET — but JIPMER PG admissions (MD/MS) still use INI-CET. JIPMER's Puducherry campus is renowned for its clinical exposure and research opportunities.
What is the JIPMER PG exam pattern for MD/MS?
JIPMER PG (MD/MS) admission is through INI-CET (Institute of National Importance Combined Entrance Test) conducted by AIIMS New Delhi — not a separate JIPMER exam. The INI-CET PG exam has 300 MCQs covering all MBBS subjects, to be answered in 3 hours. However, JIPMER also conducts its own internal entrance tests for certain super-speciality programmes (DM/MCh) where the pattern varies by subject — typically a written exam followed by a direct interview. Check the JIPMER website for the latest super-speciality admission notifications.
What should I know about studying at JIPMER?
JIPMER is unique among Indian medical institutions for several reasons: (1) It is directly under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare — not under any state government; (2) There is no bond service requirement after MBBS unlike some state medical colleges; (3) The fee structure is significantly lower than private medical colleges — JIPMER MBBS fees are approximately ₹10,000–20,000 per year including hostel; (4) JIPMER has its own stipend for PG residents comparable to government medical colleges. JIPMER alumni are found in top medical positions globally, making it a highly sought-after institution despite the intense competition for admission.
