The Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination (UPSEE), also known as AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) entrance exam, is a state-level engineering and management entrance examination conducted by the university for admission to various undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in engineering, management, and pharmacy colleges affiliated with AKTU across Uttar Pradesh. It was a significant gateway for students in Uttar Pradesh to access quality technical education. However, with the advent of national-level exams like JEE Main, many states have moved towards accepting national scores, and UPSEE has been rebranded and restructured in recent years.

What is JEEUPSEE and who is it for?
JEEUPSEE (Uttar Pradesh State Entrance Examination) is a state-level engineering entrance exam conducted by AKTU (Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Technical University) for admission to B.Tech/B.Pharm programmes in colleges across Uttar Pradesh. It is open to candidates who have passed their Class 12 (or equivalent) from a recognised board — UP domicile is required for the majority of seats under the state quota. JEEUPSEE is the primary entrance exam for government and private engineering colleges in Uttar Pradesh, including AKTU itself, and is used for around 800,000+ aspirants each year.
What is the JEEUPSEE exam pattern?
JEEUPSEE consists of 3 papers: Paper 1 (for B.Tech — Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics, 75 questions each, 3 hours) and Paper 2 (for B.Arch/B.Pharm — Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Drawing). All questions are multiple-choice with four options. Each correct answer carries 4 marks; there is a negative marking of 1 mark per wrong answer. The exam is conducted offline (pen-and-paper) in designated centres across Uttar Pradesh and other states. Questions are based on the UP Board Class 12 syllabus.
How does JEEUPSEE admission work?
JEEUPSEE scores are used for counselling through AKTU's centralized admission process. The rank is calculated based on the normalised JEEUPSEE score. Based on rank, candidates participate in online counselling for seat allocation across government colleges (IET Lucknow, MMM Gorakhpur, BIET Jhansi), government-aided, and private self-financing institutions in Uttar Pradesh. IET Lucknow typically requires a rank under 1,000 for popular branches. For other top government colleges, a rank within 5,000 is competitive. Private colleges accept ranks up to 50,000 or more depending on the college and branch.
