What is GRE and which universities accept it?
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is a standardised test required for admission to graduate and business school programmes globally — particularly in the USA, Canada, UK, Europe, and parts of Asia. It measures analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning skills. Most top universities for MS, MBA, and PhD programmes require GRE scores as part of the application. It is administered by ETS and available year-round at test centres worldwide.
What is the GRE exam pattern?
GRE consists of three sections: Analytical Writing (1 task, 30 minutes, scored 0–6), Verbal Reasoning (2 sections of ~27 questions each, 41 minutes total, scored 130–170), and Quantitative Reasoning (2 sections of ~27 questions each, 47 minutes total, scored 130–170). The exam is adaptive — performance in the first Verbal/Quant section determines difficulty of the second. An unidentified research section may also appear. Total duration is approximately 3 hours 45 minutes including breaks.
What is a good GRE score?
Most top graduate programmes look for 320+ out of 340 (165+ in Verbal and 165+ in Quant). For competitive programmes at top-tier universities (MIT, Stanford, Ivy League), 330+ is typically expected. Business schools often focus more on the Quant score for engineering programmes (165+ preferred) and Verbal score for humanities/business programmes. Always check the specific programme requirements — some universities have minimum cutoffs or use GRE scores only for screening.
