What is FMGE and who needs to take it?
FMGE (Foreign Medical Graduate Examination) is a mandatory screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for Indian citizens (or OCI cardholders) who have obtained their primary medical qualification from a medical college outside India. If you have an MBBS degree from a country like China, Ukraine, Russia, Philippines, Georgia, Nepal, Bangladesh, etc., you must clear FMGE to be eligible to practice medicine in India or apply for postgraduate studies. The exam is held twice a year (June and December sessions). Without passing FMGE, you cannot get a licence to practice as a doctor in India.
What is the FMGE exam pattern?
FMGE consists of 300 multiple-choice questions divided into two parts: Part A (150 questions) covering Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine; Part B (150 questions) covering Ophthalmology, Otorhinolaryngology, Preventive & Social Medicine, Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynecology, and Pediatrics. Each correct answer carries 1 mark; 0.25 marks are deducted for each wrong answer. The exam is conducted online (CBT) over 2 hours and 30 minutes. The pass mark is 150 out of 300 (50%).
How tough is FMGE and how should I prepare?
FMGE has a historically low pass rate — typically 10–20% of candidates clear it on any given attempt. The exam covers all 19 subjects from the MBBS curriculum, making it comprehensive and challenging for students whose foreign medical programmes may not have covered all Indian syllabus topics in equal depth. Candidates must score 150+/300 to pass. Most candidates take 2–4 attempts before clearing. StudyRoadmap covers all FMGE subjects with topic-wise notes designed for screening exam preparation.
