FMGE 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is a screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for Indian citizens (or Overseas Citizens of India) who hold a medical degree from a foreign institution and wish to practice medicine in India. All medical degrees obtained from countries outside India must be verified through FMGE before a candidate can be registered with the National Medical Commission (NMC) or any State Medical Council to practice as a qualified medical professional in India. The exam is held twice a year (June and December).

📋 Exam Pattern

FMGE consists of 300 multiple-choice questions divided into two parts: Part A (150 questions) and Part B (150 questions). The exam covers all subjects taught during the MBBS programme including Pre-Clinical (Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry), Para-Clinical (Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, Forensic Medicine, Community Medicine), and Clinical subjects (Medicine, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pediatrics, and others). Each question carries 1 mark, with no negative marking. The total duration is 2 hours 30 minutes for each part (5 hours total). The exam is conducted in online (computer-based) mode.

Eligibility Criteria

Indian citizens or Overseas Citizens of India holding a primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) from a medical institution listed in the WHO World Directory of Medical Schools or recognized by the respective country's competent authority. The medical college and university awarding the degree must be recognized by the country's medical regulatory body. Candidates must have completed their internship or be eligible to complete it before the examination. Candidates with medical degrees from China (and certain other countries) need to have studied and completed the entire MBBS programme in that country (no credit transfer allowed).

Frequently Asked Questions — FMGE

Everything you need to know about FMGE. Scroll down for the complete study guide.

What are the eligibility criteria to appear for FMGE 2026, and are there any category-based relaxations?
Indian citizens holding a primary medical qualification (MBBS or equivalent) from a foreign institution are eligible, provided the degree is recognized by the respective country's medical regulator and the candidate holds permanent or provisional registration from that country. The pass requirement is a minimum of 150 out of 300 marks (50%) for all candidates — FMGE does not prescribe separate qualifying percentages or age relaxations for SC/ST/OBC/PwD categories. Candidates must also ensure their medical college is WHO-recognized and the degree meets MCI/NMC screening norms before applying. Source: natboard.edu.in
How is the FMGE 2026 question paper structured, and does negative marking apply?
The FMGE consists of 300 multiple-choice questions administered in two sessions of 150 questions each within a single day. Each correct response earns 1 mark, while every wrong answer incurs a penalty of 0.25 marks (negative marking). The minimum qualifying score is 150 out of 300. Since the cumulative negative marking can substantially reduce your net score, avoid blind guessing — attempt only questions where you can eliminate at least two options. The CBT format is held at designated test centres across India. Source: natboard.edu.in
Which subjects carry the highest weightage in the FMGE 2026 syllabus audit?
The FMGE syllabus is divided into Pre-Clinical (~15%), Para-Clinical (~30%), and Clinical subjects (~50–55%). Clinical subjects dominate: Medicine and Surgery each yield approximately 30–35 questions, while OBG contributes 25–30 and Pediatrics 15–20 questions. Para-Clinical pillars include Pathology, Pharmacology, Microbiology, and Forensic Medicine/Community Medicine. When auditing your syllabus, prioritize these high-yield areas — mastering them effectively covers over half the paper. The exact chapter-wise distribution appears in the official FMGE information bulletin on natboard.edu.in. Source: natboard.edu.in
What are the expected key dates for the FMGE December 2026 session?
NBEMS will release the official FMGE December 2026 notification approximately 2–3 months before the exam date. Based on historical patterns, the application window opens around August–September 2026 and remains active for 3–4 weeks. Critical deadlines include registration closure, fee payment cutoff, and the final edit window. Admit cards are typically downloadable 3–4 weeks before the test. Since NBEMS announces session-specific schedules independently, monitor natboard.edu.in and the FMGE information bulletin page every 2–3 weeks for the exact 2026 calendar. Source: natboard.edu.in
How should candidates structure a syllabus audit and preparation plan for FMGE 2026?
Begin with a diagnostic self-assessment — take a full-length mock to identify weak subjects, high-weightage chapters, and topics left untouched. Cross-reference your analysis against the NBEMS FMGE syllabus to build a subject-wise completion checklist. Allocate disproportionately more time to Clinical subjects and high-yield Para-Clinical topics. Use standard MBBS textbooks for concept clarity and solve NBEMS-pattern MCQs daily. Schedule mandatory revision cycles every 10–15 days to prevent forgetting. Aspirants with 4–6 months before the exam should target finishing the first pass within 2–3 months, leaving ample time for mocks and targeted revision. Source: natboard.edu.in
