What is COMED-K and who is it for?
COMED-K (Consortium of Medical, Engineering and Dental Colleges of Karnataka) is the entrance exam for admission to undergraduate professional programmes in private colleges across Karnataka. It is specifically for students who have completed their Class 12 (2nd PUC) from any recognised board in India — unlike KCET which is primarily for Karnataka domicile students, COMED-K is open to students from all Indian states. COMED-K covers B.Tech (Engineering), B.Arch, B.Pharm, and other professional courses in approximately 150+ private unaided colleges in Karnataka. It is the largest private engineering admission exam in Karnataka and is conducted annually by the Consortium.
What is the COMED-K exam pattern?
COMED-K consists of 180 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 3 hours. For B.Tech admission: Physics (60 questions), Chemistry (60 questions), and Mathematics (60 questions). Each correct answer carries 1 mark; there is no negative marking. The exam is conducted offline (pen-and-paper) at designated centres in Karnataka and major cities across India. The difficulty level is moderate — roughly equivalent to the Karnataka Board Class 12 standard. COMED-K also has a separate exam for Medical (NEET-based ranking) and Dental programmes.
What rank do I need for COMED-K admission?
COMED-K does not release official cutoffs but publishes rank ranges. For top private engineering colleges in Bangalore: a rank within 1,000 is needed for Computer Science at RV College of Engineering (through COMED-K quota), PES University, and BMS College of Engineering. For top colleges in Bangalore and Mysore: rank within 3,000 for CS. For good colleges across Karnataka: rank within 10,000. COMED-K counselling allocates seats in two rounds. The COMED-K management quota is separate from the government merit quota and has higher fees. For NRI candidates, separate seats are available with higher fees. Key advantage over KCET: COMED-K is open to students from all states, making it the best option for non-Karnataka students seeking engineering admission in Karnataka.
