A/L Examination (Sri Lanka) 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

The Sri Lanka GCE Advanced Level (A/L) Examination is conducted by the Department of Examinations, Sri Lanka, for students who have completed their secondary education (O/L). It is the primary university entrance examination in Sri Lanka — equivalent to A-Levels or the Indian Class 12 board exams. Students choose one of three streams: Science, Commerce, or Arts — and appear for the A/L in their chosen stream. The A/L result (grades A–E) is the key determinant for university admission in Sri Lanka, where admission to public universities is highly competitive and placement is managed through the University Grants Commission (UGC) system.

Sri Lanka A/L has three streams: (1) Science Stream — subjects include Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Combined Mathematics, and ICT; (2) Commerce Stream — subjects include Economics, Business Studies, Accounting, and Information Technology; (3) Arts Stream — subjects include Sri Lankan History, Buddhism, Christianity/Islam/Hinduism, Geography, Political Science, and Logic. Students study 3 main subjects (each with theory + practical papers) plus a Common General Test (CGT) covering general knowledge and quantitative skills. Grades are awarded A (Distinction) through E (Fail) for each subject.

Sri Lanka A/L results are processed through the Z-score system — a normalised score that accounts for the difficulty of the exam and the school/section where the student studied. The Z-score determines the merit rank for university admission to public universities. The top Z-scores across all three streams compete for limited seats in popular courses like Medicine, Engineering, and Law. University admission is handled by the UGC Sri Lanka — students submit preferences after A/L results are released (typically in August). The Z-score, stream, and subject combination determine which course a student gets into — arts stream students compete for arts/humanities seats; science stream for STEM seats.
