AILET 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

The All India Law Entrance Test (AILET) is the national-level entrance examination conducted by the National Law University, Delhi (NLU Delhi) for admission to its undergraduate (BA LLB Hons.), postgraduate (LLM and PhD), and five-year integrated law programmes. AILET is one of the most prestigious law entrance exams in India, known for its high competition and rigorous selection process. The exam tests candidates on legal reasoning, logical abilities, English language proficiency, general knowledge, and mathematics. Successful candidates undergo further rounds of counselling and interviews for final admission.

📋 Exam Pattern

AILET consists of 150 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 90 minutes. The paper is divided into sections: English (approximately 35 questions) testing grammar, vocabulary, and comprehension; Legal Reasoning (approximately 35 questions) covering legal aptitude and legal GK; Logical Reasoning (approximately 35 questions); General Knowledge (approximately 35 questions) including current affairs and static GK; and Elementary Mathematics (approximately 10 questions). Each correct answer carries 1 mark, with 0.25 marks deducted for each incorrect answer. The examination is conducted in offline (pen-and-paper) mode.

✅ Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must have completed their 10+2 or equivalent examination with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks (45% for SC/ST/PwD candidates) from a recognized board. There is no upper age limit for the undergraduate programme as per the latest guidelines. Foreign nationals are also eligible to apply but must meet the equivalence requirements set by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). For the LLM programme, candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in law (LLB) with at least 55% aggregate marks (50% for SC/ST/PwD).

What is the official AILET 2026 exam date and when does registration open?
According to the NLU Delhi notification, AILET 2026 (BA LLB and LLM) is scheduled for 7 December 2025 (Sunday), with registration opening on the AILET portal from 8 September 2025. The application window closes on 25 October 2025, and the admit card releases around 28 November 2025. BA LLB candidates pay ₹3,500 (₹1,500 for SC/ST/PwD); LLM applicants pay ₹3,500 (₹1,500 reserved). How is the AILET 2026 paper scored, and what is the minimum qualifying mark?
AILET 2026 carries 150 marks; each correct answer awards 1 mark, and 0.25 marks are deducted for every wrong response, except the Quantitative Techniques section which has no negative marking. Duration is 120 minutes (2 hours) — practice strict time-blocking of 48 seconds per question. The qualifying percentage is 40% for General, 35% for SC/ST and 40% for PwD candidates. NLU Delhi offers 123 BA LLB seats (including 11 supernumerary seats for foreign nationals) and 50 LLM seats. Reservation follows Government of India norms: 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 27% OBC-NCL (creamy-layer excluded), 5% PwD and the EWS 10% category introduced in 2024. There is no separate All-India Quota — every seat is filled through AILET merit. For LLM, 20 seats sit in the Constitutional Law & Governance stream and the remaining are generic.
