ACSEE (Tanzania) 2026: Exam Pattern, Eligibility & Study Plan

ACSEE (Advanced Certificate of Secondary Education Examination) is Tanzania's upper-secondary school leaving examination taken after completing Form 6 (two years after Form 4 NTSC). It is the equivalent of A-Levels or the Kenyan KCSE. Students who have completed their CSEE (Form 4) and want to pursue higher education in Tanzania must pass ACSEE to qualify for university admission. ACSEE is administered by the National Examinations Council of Tanzania (NECTA). It covers Arts, Science, and Commercial streams, each with specialised subject combinations required for different university programmes.

ACSEE has three main streams: (1) Science — Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology, Geography, English; (2) Arts — History, Geography, Kiswahili, English, Economics,Commerce; (3) Commerce — Economics, Commerce, Accounting, Mathematics, Geography, English. Each student selects a combination of at least 3 principal passes (subsidiary passes are also awarded). For direct university admission, students need at least 2 principal passes in relevant subjects for their chosen programme. Medical programmes typically require 3 principal passes in Science subjects including Chemistry and Biology.

Tanzanian universities use ACSEE results through the TAMISEMI admission system (for public universities) and through individual university direct admissions. The minimum requirement is usually 2 principal passes (grade A–D) in relevant subjects. For competitive courses like Medicine, Engineering, and Law, 3 principal passes with good grades are typically required. Students also need a minimum pass in Kiswahili and English at subsidiary level. After ACSEE results are released (typically in May), students apply through the university admission portal and are placed based on their exam performance and subject combinations.
